Obtained in an excerpt from People on Monday, the Funny girl The actress opened up about her iconic look, revealing that throughout her career she was often told to get a nose job and consider dental work to become more marketable – but she was never sold. She writes:

“I thought, ‘Isn’t my talent enough?’ A nose job would be painful and expensive. Besides, how could I trust anyone to do exactly what I wanted and nothing more?”

It’s a problem with any cosmetic surgery – it’s not always the look of your dreams. What’s more, she says she’s actually always liked the shape of her nose!

“I also liked long noses… the Italian actress Silvana Mangano had one, and everyone seemed to think she was beautiful.”

Good for you! Above all, Babs feared that surgery might potentially affect her musical sound! She says:

“The risk was too great. And who knew what it could do to my voice? A doctor once told me I had a deviated septum…maybe that’s why I sound the way I do.”

That’s a really good point! She wouldn’t be the first person to have nasal surgery and find that it changed the sound! She’s absolutely beautiful anyway – so why risk that unique voice?

But she was clearly aware of the criticism about her appearance. In another excerpt, Barbra remembers the year 1964 Time A magazine story described her nose as a “shrine” that gave her the “essence of a hunting dog.”

Ouch… You know that hurt when she’s been holding it in for 60 years! But now she thinks:

“I think when you become famous you become public property. You are an object to be examined, photographed, analyzed, dissected… and half the time I don’t recognize the person they are portraying. I never got used to it and try to avoid reading about myself.”

After all this time, she is “still hurt by the insults” and she “can’t quite believe the praise,” she says. Oh! Well, the insults are nonsense and the praise is well deserved!
