Barcelona CEO confirms key midfielder ‘100%’ to stay

Gavi celebrates scoring for Barcelona.

Barcelona’s director of football, Mateu Alemany, said he was “100%” confident that 17-year-old midfielder Gavi would sign a new contract and extend his career at the Camp Nou.

Gavi’s current deal is set to expire in 2023 and negotiations have yet to reach an agreement between the two, fueling rumors the teen star could be drawn away from the Catalan giants.

Alemany gave an update on the situation during his press conference on Wednesday, July 6 and gave an explanation why the club have yet to agree a new contract with the Spain international.

“There is an outline of an agreement. We are very committed to addressing this situation,” he said. “He is 17 years old and we are waiting until he turns 18 on August 5 so he can sign a contract longer than three years. We have small details to work out, but we’ll work it out. 100% Gavi will continue at Barça. “

Gavi is the one who was revealed last season for Barcelona, who made his way into the starting XI for club and country and went on to make 45 appearances in all competitions for both teams.

Laporta reiterates De Jong .’s stance

Xavi will have plenty of options in midfield next season with Gavi joining Pedri, Nico Gonzalez, Sergio Busquets and rookie Franck Kessie in the Camp Nou starting XI.

Dutchman Frenkie de Jong could also be for Xavi, although the midfielder’s future remains uncertain amid interest from Premier League side Manchester United.

President Joan Laporta also spoke at the press conference and once again confirmed that the club did not want to sell De Jong, despite rumors to the contrary.

“He is a Barça player and we, if not necessary, would not sell him because we do not want to sell him,” he said. “We know that he has offers but at the moment we are not considering them.”

However, De Jong’s wages are an issue for Barcelona and the club have told the midfielder he must take a “drastic” pay cut if he continues, as Marca reports.

Barcelona Offers Update Dembele

Ousmane Dembele is another player who could sign a new contract at Barcelona. Technically, the striker is a free agent after his contract expires at the end of June.

However, he is in talks about an extension and Laporta also gave an update on the current situation regarding the Frenchman and Barcelona.

“Ousmane is not a Barça player now but we made an offer for him for sporting reasons. He was unable to accept our offer but he wanted to continue talking. For us, if it weren’t for this moment, we would have kept talking,” Laporta explained. “A balance of pay is necessary for the team to be competitive and all negotiations take place in this context. We are in no hurry, although we are aware that we cannot wait too long. We players have a verbal agreement to understand the situation. No one can expect us not to act with the utmost discretion.”

Dembele could sign a new two-year contract at Camp Nou that runs until June 2024, Diario Sport reports. However, if he stays, he will also have to accept a substantial pay cut.
