By the 2022 World Cup, White is hoping to be a Champions League player too, as Arsenal also aim for a top-four finish in these final months of the season.

Nonetheless, former Arsenal defender Upson praised the quality White has at his feet and the versatility in his game.

“I think he’s done very well for Arsenal,” Upson said. “I like his mobility. He is very light on the ground. Reads the play very well.

“He is a player who is very happy with the ball. He is excellent at that. He likes to play in midfield and drive the ball.

“How many times I’ve seen him at Brighton, especially when he played wide as a three, how many runs he made and ended up delivering a pass in front of the opponent’s back four. He offers something different.”

White has shown a wide range of quality since swapping Brighton colors for Arsenal and his recent rise should be welcomed.

It must be remembered that this is only his second full season in England’s top flight and he is showing his talents as if he has been playing at the top level for years.

From his ability to be a hard-hitting defender and then gracefully drive forward and launch attacks.

He was a starter in a friendly in England’s 2-1 win over Switzerland on Saturday, starting in a back three for Southgate.

When the Three Lions boss switched to a flat back four, White pulled out at right-back, switching gears and demonstrating his ability to ride up and down that channel.
