Matthew Upson slammed Arsenal defender Ben White for “watching balls” in England’s 2-1 win over Switzerland. as he told BBC Sport.
Arsenal’s powerful centre-back was brought out of the cold at Wembley after Manchester City’s John Stones was sidelined through injury.
Stones was chosen to start in third defense during the friendly but a problem warming up meant White had to be drafted.
It was a day for Arsenal’s 24-year-old as he switched from the bench to start, playing in a back three and switching to right-back later in the game.
Nonetheless, in Switzerland’s opening game, which fell from a Xherdan Shaqiri cross, ex-Arsenal man Upson criticized White for misjudging the ball’s trajectory and allowing Embolo to go home behind him.
“One moment in that first half; a real piece of quality,” said Upson.
“A great cross comes in (from Shaqiri) and Embolo peels off in the box. Ben White is watching the ball. It’s a good finish.”
Like the rest of the England team, White was lackluster in the first half and started slowly.
But in the second half, as things started to take hold of him, White gained more confidence and speed in his game.
When Gareth Southgate switched from a back three to a flat back four, he played White at right-back.
And as he did in midfield, the versatile player showed his value, running up and down that cross in a delicate manner.
Maybe something for Mikel Arteta to look at if he ever needs someone to fill in that right flank.
In other news, Fabio Paratici says Romero is “important” for Spurs but another defender is just “amazing”.
