Chicago Bears guard Matthew Adams was arrested Thursday, June 23, and charged with gun possession, according to a TMZ report.
The Bears signed Adams for a year in April, and he’s currently listed as the team’s number one winger on ESPN’s depth charts, which would make him a starter if The season starts today.
According to the TMZ report, Adams was “accused of unlawful use of a light weapon – carrying/possessing a firearm… and is believed to have a high-capacity magazine and metal-piercing ammunition”. TMZ reported that although Adams had a gun license, it was not registered in the state of Illinois.
The report also said Adams was initially questioned by police “at around 6:45 p.m. after he was discovered near a Jeep that is believed to have been stolen. Adams is said to have bought the car… but when the police searched the car, they found a loaded shotgun in the center console and a shotgun in the trunk. “
TMZ also reported that the owner of the Jeep decided not to bring charges, “considering that the whole incident was just a misunderstanding.”

Adams has a solid history with Bears HC Matt Eberflus
A seventh-round pick for the 2018 Indianapolis Colts (221st overall), Adams spent his first four seasons in Indianapolis, playing in 58 games and starting nine games. He registered a total of 55 tackles (six lost), two midfield hits and one rebound, according to Pro Football Reference.
He has played mainly in special teams over the past two seasons, where he has carved out a solid role for himself. He played on 79% of Indy’s specials teams last season and he had a memorable tackle that led to beating the Colts:
Adams also developed a strong enough relationship with the Bears’ first-year head coach, Matt Eberflus, who served as defensive coordinator for Indianapolis from 2018 to 2021, for Eberflus to add him to the defence. of Chicago this season.
TMZ also reported that Adams, 26, is set to appear in court in August 2022. He is the second Bears free agent to be arrested this season, after wide receiver Byron Pringle was accused of driving. reckless car and had his license suspended in April.

What does the Bears depth chart look like behind Adams?
It’s not great. Roquan Smith, the Bears’ four-year start, will of course be the team’s No. 1 LB, and is currently listed first on the depth chart in central midfield. Behind Smith are Caleb Johnson and Noah Dawkins.
The acquisition of freelance agent Nicholas Morrow, another former Colt, is expected to begin opposite Smith at the textile seller support firm, with Joe Thomas, CJ Avery and Christian Albright behind him.
After Adams, however, the depth was sparse at best, with unskilled free agent LB Jack Sanborn being the only player listed. Sanborn was a standout player at the University of Wisconsin, but he was a long shot to make the team’s 53-man roster.
Considering this lack of depth, the Bears may want to bring in another LB to compete with Sanborn, because if Adams is injured or unavailable, the Bears will find themselves with a huge hole in the middle of their defence. .
