Best competitive builds for Meowscarada in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

Screenshot of Pro Game Guides

Meowscarada and the other starter evolutions are very competitive in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet. His signature move, Flower Trick, always results in a critical hit. It also doesn’t check for accuracy or dodge, making it impossible to miss unless the target is protecting itself. The Pokémon is fast, strong, and has plenty of moves to use to support its allied Pokémon. These are the best competitive sets for Meowscarada in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet.

The best competitive moves for Meowscarada in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

Meowscarada is exceptionally fast, outperforming almost any Pokemon in VGC format. Its hidden ability, Mutable, changes Meowscarada’s type to the attack move it uses. This can give Meowscarada STAB or Same Type Attack bonus to his moves, dealing 50% more damage to him. Of course, his normal ability is Overgrow and increases the power of Grass Type Moves by 50% on top of his normal Grass STAB. These are all offensive and support moves that can be used in a competitive team:

offensive moves

  • flower trick – Since this move is always critical, it ignores any attack debuffs Meowscarada has, as well as any defense buffs the target has.
  • Fast Attack – Each priority move can be useful for knocking out low HP Pokemon or avoiding getting hit by Sucker Punch. With Protean, this also grants Meowscarada an immunity to ghost movement.
  • U-turn – Dealing damage and switching to a Pokemon can be valuable to switch to something that resists the incoming attack or something with Intimidate. This can also deal quadruple damage to other enemy Meowscarada.
  • play wild – Fairy coverage is valuable and threatens Fighting-types that counter Meowscarada.
  • knock off – Removing items from Pokemon such as Choice Scarf or Sitrus Berry can greatly reduce an opposing Pokemon’s threat level.
  • low kick – Although the damage depends on how much the target weighs, this is a great move for dealing with Steel-type Pokemon.
  • acrobatics – The flying type cover can be very strong as long as Meowscarada’s item is used up.
  • foul play – This move can be used against Pokémon that have increased their Attack to use it against them.
  • thunder blow – Meeting Flying-type Pokémon, which usually threaten Meowscarada, can be important. With Protean, her flight moves also deal less damage.
  • Tera Blast – Coverage of any kind is good for all attack-focused Pokémon.
  • sucker Punch – This is arguably the best Dark Type move Meowscarada can learn, aside from Knock Off.

support movements

  • trick – With Meowscarada’s high speed, they easily trade items with their allies or opponents. Assorted items or a flaming orb are prime candidates for trade.
  • Grassy terrain – Setting up Grassy Terrain quickly can reduce the effectiveness of opposing Expanding Force Pokémon in Psychic Terrain.
  • charm – Lowering a Pokémon’s Attack can make Meowscarada and its allied Pokémon survive longer.
  • fake tears – Combined with a friendly Special Attack Pokémon, this can greatly increase the damage it deals to a target.
  • To protect – Archer is useful on almost any Pokemon in Double Battles, and can waste an opponent’s entire turn if they focus on a Pokemon using it.
  • Low Sweep – The damage isn’t terrible, but the speed control of this movement is more valuable.
  • break brick – The damage isn’t bad, but the ability to break reflective and light screens makes it useful.
  • mockery – A quick taunt user can render the opponent unable to set up Swords Dance or even Protect.
  • ability swap – Taking away an opponent’s Pokemon’s ability or an ally’s Pokemon’s ability can lead to sneaky strategies.
  • Helping hand – Increasing the power of an allied Pokémon’s moves can ensure a KO.
  • pollen count – Although Meowscarada is not a special attacker, this move can damage enemies or heal allies, making it much more useful.
  • trick room – This can be a sneaky counter against Tailwind teams and provides an alternate way to overtake opponents.
  • Ally switch – Switching places with allied Pokémon can keep them or Meowscarada alive in difficult situations.
  • Leech Seed – This move, usually paired with Protect, can hold Meowscarada or a powered-up ally with passive HP.

Best EV Spread and Builds for Meowscarada in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

When trying to figure out how to train Pokémon with EV, it’s important to figure out what role they play on the team. Meowscarada is a very fast physical attacker and can do a lot of damage with the right setup. Focus Sash can be used to ensure it survives any hit and pairs very well with Overgrow. Alternatively, Life Orb and Protean work well together to guarantee additional damage to whatever it hits. Here are some sample sets:

Protean attacker

  • article – Orb of Life/Selection Tape
  • Nature – Cheerful/unyielding
  • electric vehicles – 252 Attack, 252 Speed, 4 Special Defense
  • Tera type – Steel/Fire
  • capability – Diverse
  • Is moving
    • flower trick
    • Shooting/U Turn/move cover
    • sucker Punch/knock off
    • Fast Attack / Rough Game/Tera Blast

There are many perks for Protean, but the move only changes Meowscarada’s type once when switched into combat. Dark Attacks grant him an immunity to Psychic moves, while Normal does the same for Ghost. Having so much cover makes it a threat to multiple Pokemon, and U-Turn can give it a way out of battle to replace its typing. Sucker Punch requires some extra work with either the race or the Mirrorweed, but is one of the best moves in the game.

overgrow attackers

  • article – Focus Sash
  • Nature – Cheerful/unyielding
  • Ev – 252 Attack, 252 Speed, 4 Special Defense
  • Tera type – Grass/Fire
  • capability – Overgrown
  • Is moving
    • flower trick
    • sucker Punch/knock off
    • Play Rough/Quick Attack/U-Turn
    • Protect/Tera Blast/Move cover

The idea behind this build is to get Meowscarada to drop to 1 HP with his Focus Sash to activate Overgrow. This causes Flower Trick to deal 50% more damage and can be further boosted by Terastalizing with a Grastera type. With a Fire Tera-type, this gives Meowscarada the ability to damage Steel-types, which he normally couldn’t do before.

Trick Room/Support

  • article – Focus Sash/Sitrus Berry
  • Nature – Cheeky/impish
  • electric vehicles – 252 Special Defense, 252 HP, 4 Attack
  • Tera type – Grass/Dark
  • capability – Overgrowth/Protean
  • Is moving
    • trick room
    • Ally switch
    • Helping hand/pollen count/shooters
    • Flower Trick/Sucker Punch

This set does its best to ensure Trick Room is set up. While Trick Room is active, only priority moves ensure Meowscarada can still help its allied Pokémon. Ally Switch, Helping Hand, and Sucker Punch all have increased priority so they move first regardless of reverse speed order. Flower Trick can be used in Overgrow, allowing Meowscarada to continue dealing damage.
