the New York Times reports that President Joe Biden’s decision to end border protection under Title 42 could lead to a surge in migrants crossing the border illegally by 18,000 times a day — a pace that equates to over 6.5 million migrants a year.
In comparison, almost 6,000 migrants per day were encountered by border police in December 2021.
Title 42 is a pandemic-era protection that allows authorities to turn migrants away on grounds of slowing the spread of COVID-19, and is one of the few border enforcement tools Donald Trump-era President Biden has retained.
The Biden administration will end Title 42 on May 23, according to reports earlier this week that were confirmed Friday.

The Department of Homeland Security briefed lawmakers and reporters Tuesday on its preparations to deal with up to 18,000 illegal border crossings a day, which it considers “mass irregular migration.” Officials said federal agencies are coordinating with state and local officials to provide additional personnel, transportation, detention facilities and medical assistance along the border. The department also released an official planning document to respond to various scenarios when there is a surge in illegal immigration.
Postponing the change to later this spring gives the administration more time to prepare. But Brandon Judd, the president of the Border Patrol Union, said the agency could not adequately prepare for the change in a month and a half. Expelling migrants under public health rules takes about 15 minutes, he said, compared to usual processing, which can take hours per person.
Given that around 2 million migrants entered the U.S. across the border in 2021, with the surge ahead, at least three times as many migrants would cross the border. The Biden administration initially dismissed the increasing migration as seasonal.
