Biden has received the updated COVID-19 vaccine and annual flu shot, the White House says

President Joe Biden has received the updated COVID-19 vaccine and annual flu shot, the White House announced Saturday. The White House physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor said in a memo that Biden received both vaccinations on Friday. O’Connor said Biden, 80, was also vaccinated against the respiratory disease known as RSV several weeks ago. “As cold and flu season begins, the President encourages all Americans to follow his lead and check with their health care provider or pharmacist to ensure they are fully vaccinated,” O’Connor wrote. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention earlier this month endorsed the new COVID-19 vaccination for everyone 6 months and older. The severity of the COVID-19 pandemic has eased, but there are still thousands of hospitalizations and hundreds of deaths each week in the United States. Experts fear that immunity from previous vaccinations and infections is waning in many people and a new vaccination would save many lives. First lady Jill Biden tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this month but only had mild symptoms. The CDC recommends that people who have COVID-19 and are in isolation wait to be vaccinated until symptoms have resolved and isolation guidelines have been met. According to the CDC, children and adults with multisystem inflammatory syndrome should wait to be vaccinated until they have recovered from the illness and 90 days have passed since diagnosis. Biden tested positive for COVID-19 in July 2022 and a second time just over three times days after he was cleared to leave coronavirus isolation. The second incident was a rare case of “rebound” infection following treatment with an antiviral drug.
