Belichick’s subject matter and identity were never built on legacy or name. In their world, each individual must earn their respect and legacy by being consistent. Throughout his coaching career, he was never out for titles. In this upcoming season, however, Belichick may be looking to prove something to the world. The Patriots will be without an offensive and defensive coordinator next season. This will put pressure on Belichick, arguably more pressure than ever.
“I think our staff is complete,” reported Chris Mason for Mass Live. “I wouldn’t rule anything out. But I don’t think we necessarily need to hire anyone else.”
“I’m not a big fan of titles,” Belichick said. “We have work to do. We do the work.”
The responsibilities of New England Patriots coaches are increasing
It’s no secret that the Patriots have been stagnant in the offseason up to this point. The biggest concern, however, seems to be whether the Patriots coaching staff will bite off more than they can chew. In the press conference, Belichick tries to reassure many of the skeptical fans by trusting the process. Belichick is an old school coach and believes in building teams rather than buying them.
“We had a lot of coaches who did multiple jobs,” Belichick said. “Josh and Brian Daboll were on defense and going on offense. Matt was on offense and went on defense. So on and so on. I’m not worried about that. I think a good coach is a good coach. Matt is a great coach.”
Outside the 2021 off-season where he unusually spent $288 million, reported by David Esser for Sportscasting, has stayed true to his roots. The biggest names the Patriots acquired this offseason were TE Hunter Henry for $37.5 million over three years and Matthew Judon for $56 million over four years. The list goes on, but many of these big-money players haven’t necessarily paid off, which has forced the Patriots to lose money elsewhere.
The Patriots have to cut their salaries
Although Belichick decided to invest heavily in the Patriots’ future with star players, many saw this as detrimental to the Patriots’ future. For the Patriots to reach the playoffs with rookie QB Mac Jones is very impressive. However, the Patriots have not won a playoff game since 2018 when they defeated the Los Angeles Rams in the Super Bowl. via ESPN.
Due to reckless spending, the Patriots were forced to sell RG’s start Shaq Mason and Star CB JC Jackson. While the Patriots managed to bring RT back Trento Brownit’s hard to ignore the serious impact of last year’s spending.
