Blood Origin is absolutely toasted by early reviews

Things are definitely not looking good for the new Witcher spin-off series.

Early media screening reviews for The Witcher: Blood Origin are pouring in, and they’re… far from favorable. The prequel series to the Netflix hit The Witcher currently sits at 54 on Metacritic with four reviews from well-known outlets. It’s hard to say where it will sit as more reviews come in, but two reviews coming in under 40 certainly seems a foreshadowing.

Blood Origin has always had its source material (or lack thereof) working against it. The series is not based on work by Andrzej Sapkowski, the author of The Witcher novels. Based on this information, fans of the Netflix series and novels have taken to social media to label Blood Origin “fan fiction.” The lack of reference material to work with means that everything for Blood Origin goes back to the series writers, and it seems the result isn’t exactly a grand slam.

The production didn’t run smoothly either. It was revealed back in September that Netflix’s original order of six episodes had been cut to four instead. That never bodes well for a series, and instead looks like Netflix executives have had enough foresight to try to recoup some costs by capping the train wreck in advance.

It’s sad to think how wasted this cast has been on something that very likely underperforms. Action icon Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) deserves a lot more than what this series seems to offer.

There’s a certain balance to be struck compared to the rest of The Witcher. The show’s first season is also at 54 on Metacritic, but the second season saw a rise to 69.

We’ll continue to monitor the results, but of course things don’t look good. Blood Origin is absolutely toasted by early reviews
