British Airways pilot dies just before his scheduled flight as captain from Heathrow to Cairo

A British Airways pilot suffered a heart attack and died just before he was due to fly a plane full of holidaymakers back to the UK.

The unnamed pilot was getting ready to pilot the flight from Cairo to Heathrow when he collapsed at the crew’s hotel.

The pilot managed to get from his room to the foyer where colleagues performed CPR on him but tragically were unable to save him.

Airlines bosses were forced to postpone the scheduled Airbus A321 flight without passengers knowing the reasons for their wait, The Sun reports.

A source told the newspaper: “It rocked BA. It is inconceivable that he would have had a heart attack at 30,000 feet.”

The veteran pilot had reportedly been suffering from an illness in the months leading up to his death.

His body was brought back to the UK in a Boeing 787 flown to Egypt, especially as there was no space for the coffin in the hold of the jet it was planned for.

Bosses at BA were tasked with informing the pilot’s family of his sudden death.

BA said: “Our thoughts are with the friends and family of our colleagues at this very sad time.”

The company has been contacted for further comments.
