Brittney Griner’s wife shares the basketball star feels her life doesn’t matter anymore

As Brittney Griner As her wife Cherelle Griner prepares for her appeal hearing later this month, she sat down for her first interview since Brittney was sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison for attempted drug smuggling.

During her interview with Gayle King for CBS News, Cherelle shared that she had spoken to Brittney twice on the phone since she was locked up in Russia. She says that when she first called, she was pleased to hear Brittney’s voice and thought Brittney was okay. However, she says, after the second call with Brittney, it was the “most disturbing” call she’s ever had. Cherelle went on to share that she could tell Brittney suffered to the maximum on that particular day.

While expressing that she can see that Brittney isn’t herself right now, she shared that Brittney said to her, “My life just doesn’t matter anymore. I feel like my life just doesn’t matter.”

Gayle King noted that Cherelle hopes a prisoner swap can take place before Brittney’s Oct. 25 appeal hearing. She expressed concern that once the hearing is held and the order is finalized, Brittney may be able to be transferred to a labor camp.

Cherelle also said:

“For me it’s like a movie. I say, ‘In no world did I ever think, you know, that our President and a President of a foreign nation would have to sit down and discuss my wife’s freedom.’ Even though everyone gives me a different definition of what BG is, to me it feels like she’s held hostage.”

As so far Brittney Griner was reportedly found guilty of attempted drug smuggling in August and sentenced to nine years in prison and a fine of about $16,300 – one million rubles.
