George Paton speaks to the media in 2021.
There are only so many people on the NFL roster – 53 to be exact. However, with a roster that looks talented – like the Denver Broncos – there’s a chance for a shooter rated player to be out of the team.
That could be the case with defensive midfielder Mike Purcell.
Sports Illustrated’s multi-mile group chat analyst Erick Trickell spoke on the “Dove Valley Deep Divers” podcast and believes the 31-year-old veteran is indeed a good candidate.
“I think Mike Purcell is on his way out,” Trickell said. “I think Purcell’s age and form are going against him as well as the cost. People need to remember Denver’s at this point, where they have to consider how much space they have on the lid this year. So they can move it to next year when they will have to extend Russell Wilson further. “
The Broncos could take a pay cut from Purcell, who has a $4.3 million cap in 2022. He also has a $4.2 million cap in 2023 as the team will need limited space for one copy. Wilson’s potential extension.
Trickell continued, “He refused. He had that great year two years ago. . . He’s gotten worse since then and especially last year was really troublesome and problematic for the defence. He will continuously shoot a distance when he is asked to double and leave only space and the midfielders cannot make up.
Purcell test
Purcell played his first three seasons in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers, playing in 25 games and finishing with 29 tackles and a sack. He spent 2017 and 2018 with several teams practicing before signing a one-year contract with the Broncos in April 2019.
Trickell mentioned Purcell’s special 2019 season. Purcell scored 28 tackles and lost 8 tackles. In October 2020, he will sign a three-year, $14.8 million deal with Denver through Spotrac.
It hasn’t gone to plan since then. Purcell played 19 games over the past two seasons due to a season-end leg injury in 2020 and missed last season with a finger injury.
In his third season with the Broncos, Purcell played 13 games, registering 17 tackles this year.
Denver will debut Purcell, who played 23 games during his time with the team. If he is released, there is a player who can step in.
Who can replace Purcell?
DeShawn Williams could come and take Purcell’s place. In 2021, Williams starts eight games and has a total of one shot and five quarterbacks.
Williams will compete with former 49ers DJs Jones, Purcell and Dre’Mont Jones. Others to watch out for are Iowa State DL rookies Eyioma Uwazurike, Wisconsin’s Matt Henningsen and back-to-back Jonathan Kongbo, Marquiss Spencer, McTelvin Agim and Jonathan Harris, who will also be looking to land some role.
The Broncos put DJ Jones on the field to strengthen the defense and help the defense rush.
However, The Athletic’s Nick Kosmider wrote on June 30 that the defense still had unproven pieces.
“The Broncos have a good background in Dre’Mont Jones and DJ Jones, who are supported by Mike Purcell who is chubby when healthy. But the surrounding cast is relatively unproven, and this feels like a group that could be in trouble if it suffers a significant injury or two.”
Purcell has been a proven player in the past but has struggled in recent times. The training camp will be important to see how the defenses are shaken.
