Burke landed the coveted co-hosting gig after winning the Mirrorball trophy as a DWTS contestant in 2008. By that time, she had already racked up some co-hosting credits for “Wild On” and “Rock Star: Supernova.” per IMDbbut DWTS was a whole new ball game for them.

In a recent interview, Burke said being a DWTS contestant has helped her hone her skills as a presenter — but she’s still not immune to blunders on live television.

In an interview in April 2022 on the podcast “Behind the Velvet Rope with David Yontef”.Burke revealed that she wanted to compete on DWTS more than serve as a host.

“I wanted to dance on the show more than I even thought about hosting the show because I want her to break that wall of hosting and let America get to know me,” she said. “[Winning the mirrorball trophy], it has given me great experience hosting it. It was a different shift. It really improved my hosting skills.”

Burke also addressed the challenges of hosting a live TV show and how she once misintroduced an iconic song.

“Hosting live television is tight,” she said. “There is always an agenda. There isn’t much room to play. … Live TV is very difficult to manage and anticipate and just turns around when it needs to and something goes wrong.”

“I also look back on some things and I’m like, oh my god, did I really do or say that?” she revealed. “I remember we were in the ballroom once and I wasn’t really experienced when I got the gig, so I learned it. I had insecurities and fear, but I remember doing a live performance or something and it was Somewhere Over the Rainbow and I screwed up the name Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Like you have to be a complete idiot, but it’s just, you know, you’re reading and there’s pressure. And you know, sometimes we read phonetically like we’re doing things that aren’t human when we’re acting like a host. I mean, I think I screwed up a word or something. And I think in the earliest stages of my career if you make a mistake you just rolled over it, or now I’d probably be like, ‘Did I just say that? Oh my goodness. Like one of the greatest songs of the most famous songs in the world, let me go back.'”

Burke also revealed that after being fired from DWTS, she “had to put on my big girl pants and figure out what came next.”

In 2020, Tyra Banks replaced Bergeron and Burke’s successor Erin Andrews as the solo host on “Dancing With the Stars.” The supermodel has been heavily criticized by DWTS diehards.

During her first season as a DWTS host in October 2020, Banks made a big mistake She announced it wrong a pair as “safe” from elimination before realizing she got the names wrong. After telling “Cheer” coach Monica Aldama and her partner Val Chmerkovskiy that they were safe, Banks had to backtrack and let them know they were indeed one of the two couples at risk.

Banks later claimed that their cue cards were wrong.

“Wowzer. Live TV. Wrong name on cards. It’s so challenging to deal with moments like this. But we’re going through it,” the DWTS host and executive producer tweeted after the live show. per deadline.

banks later said Us Weekly that she’d rather screw it up than come across as wrong.

“Every host screws up. It’s just normal,” she told the outlet. “This is live TV. If it wasn’t live, there wouldn’t be any mess. Even on America’s Next Top Model.,’ I would screw it up and tell my editors to leave it in. That makes things human and makes it alive. If I don’t want to screw up, if I want to be perfect, then I know how to do it. There is a very clear way of hosting that you just read the words and you are perfect and you know exactly how to do that. But when you’re relaxed and keep it real, the messes happen. And the producer in me knows that, even though someone might say, ‘Oh my god, you’re screwing it up!’ it’s live and it’s real. It’s better than being like a doll.”
