Brothers, ages 3 and 11, stabbed to death in a Bronx apartment

Two young children died at a Bronx animal shelter after being stabbed multiple times in the neck and torso, police said Saturday – shortly after the boys’ “erratic, naked mother was arrested as a person of interest.”

The incident took place around 7:20 p.m. at an apartment in a family home near Mount Hope and saw both a three-year-old and 11-month-old child killed.

Her 24-year-old mother was taken into custody around 7:50 p.m., police said in a late night press, revealing the arrest came about half an hour before the bodies were discovered.

Officials were first dispatched to the residence after receiving a call at 7:20 p.m. complaining about a woman who was behaving “erratically”. Upon arrival, police said, they found a naked woman in the kitchen setting objects on fire.

Despite “acting irrationally,” the woman was taken into custody without incident and taken to a nearby hospital for a check-up.

Minutes after officers left, the boys’ father discovered the two children were unresponsive in the apartment’s bathtub and called officers back a second time around 7:55 p.m.

Before their arrival, neighbors helped the father pull the boys out of the tub and try to revive them, to no avail. They were taken to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, according to police, where they were pronounced dead.

The mother, whose name was not released, is currently being held as a person of interest, Deputy Patrol Borough Bronx Chief Louis De Ceglie said at 11pm Saturday outside the building at 246 Echo Place.

“Officials took the woman into custody without incident and awaited the response of the ambulance.”

That call was reportedly heard by a fourth-floor neighbor who helped the distraught father pull the children out of the tub when he found them and perform CPR.

Speaking to the New York Post, the neighbor, who asked not to be named, opened up about the drama that unfolded less than 30 minutes after the woman was arrested and the boys were pronounced dead.

“I tried to give the little baby some air, but it was too much,” the neighbor told the newspaper, claiming that police officers and other emergency officials “walked past” the children the first time.

“It’s just sad.”

Another witness told the outlet how amid the commotion, she heard the father yell desperately, “Help me,” as he carried the boys’ bloodied bodies down the building’s hallway.

However, efforts to resuscitate the children were ultimately unsuccessful, despite being administered by the aforementioned neighbor and an unidentified family member, police officers said.

The cause of death will be determined by the coroner, police said.

Meanwhile, reports from public housing neighbors in the Bronx paint a picture that suggests so The murders may have been the culmination of a domestic dispute not unknown to the family.

Police said there had been an earlier call to the residence “several years ago” about an argument.

The mother of the children remained in custody as an interested person. No charges were filed at this time.
