The Cleveland Browns have been investigating rerun options in this year’s NFL Draft, with Georgia’s James Cook featured as the latest visit for the AFC North team.

Cook is the brother of celebrity Dalvin Cook, one of the NFL’s top linebackers. The Browns staged him a top 30 visit on Thursday. Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski coached Cook while in Minnesota and can expect to get something similar from his brother.

James Cook dashed for 1,503 yards and 14 touches, averaging 6.5 yards per take while with the Bulldogs. He added 67 passes for 730 yards and six picks up.

Here’s how NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein breaks down the younger Cook on his draft record:

Variable-speed runners have vision and flow but lack functional play power. The younger brother of the Dalvin Cook reruns, James has his brother’s talent for single-line cuts and the ability to stack cuts seamlessly throughout the second level. However, he is missing out on his big brother’s build, contact balance and toughness between shots, which is sure to draw expectations and demands from an NFL club. . His tight style suits the outside area and plays around. He can also be used as an inappropriate pick as a pass catcher. Cook has the potential to play big but it’s unlikely that his carry count will go that high.

The Browns also hosted the Arizona State rerun of Rachaad White this week for a visit.

Browns need to run back to the depth behind Chubb, hunt

The Browns have what is vying for one of the best two back punches in the NFL with Kareem Hunt and Nick Chubb. However, as last year showed, injuries can ruin that in a hurry, both with significant time missed.

Chubb played 14 games, dashing 1,259 yards and making eight touches. Hunt played in just eight games, scoring 386 yards and hitting the ground five times.

Following in their absence was D’Ernest Johnson, who took his chance when his number was called. The free agent without a career raked in 534 yards on 100 hits with three touchdowns. He also made 19 tackles for 137 yards.

Johnson has worked his way up to the NFL and will likely succeed in all of his hard work. Just a few years ago, he was working on a fishing boat after going out for a day’s living. He also spent time in the AFL, running 372 yards and 22 more tackles from 220 yards.

Johnson dashed for 146 yards in his first NFL career start last season and broke the 100 yard mark again in the final game of the season.

Johnson is a limited free agent and could return to the Browns next season. However, he recently hired super agent Drew Rosenhaus, hinting that he may be looking for a bigger deal elsewhere.

Browns First Pick Traded in Deshaun Watson Offer

The Browns’ top pick in the draft was in the second round with pick number 44. The Browns passed their first pick to the Texans in exchange for fullback Deshaun Watson. The team also sent fifth and sixth round picks to Dallas in exchange for recipient Amari Cooper, taking back Dallas’ sixth.

The Browns also had the following options in the draft process:

  • Round 3: Pick 78
  • Round 3: Pick 99 (choose offset)
  • Round 4: Choose 118
  • Round 6: Pick 202 (from DAL)
  • Round 7: Pick 223

The Browns have a number of needs beyond running back, including on the defensive line and at wide reception.
