Baker Mayfield doesn’t know where he will play next season but the Cleveland Browns quarterback is starting to prepare for next year following season-long shoulder surgery.

Mayfield has worked in Texas with free agents Cole Beasley and Danny Amendola in Texas, where all three are from.

“What I do know is that he was throwing with some veteran receivers at Cole Beasley and Danny Amendola in Texas. And also Alex Bachman, the only guy in the group with a job. He is currently a broad receiver with the Giants on a futures contract,” Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported this week. “Mayfield continues to get to work. I hope this is how it will continue until the situation with the Browns resolves itself.”

During his first four years with the Browns, Mayfield traditionally hosted several Texas teammates in the off-season to get some work done.

Browns in no hurry to trade Baker Mayfield

Mayfield and the Browns are struggling as the team searches for him a new home following the acquisition of Deshaun Watson. It’s an easy task, however, as Mayfield has a salary of nearly $19 million for next season. The Browns have said they will patiently try to find the right move.

“I wouldn’t say we have a specific timetable for the QB room,” said Browns GM reporter Andrew Berry at the NFL Annual Meeting Tuesday. “Baker is a professional player, he has a contract and we have (limited) flexibility whether he is on the list or not. So we don’t really feel compelled to rush into anything that isn’t optimal.”

There is speculation that the Browns could play the long game with Mayfield and even hang him as an insurance policy in the event that Deshaun Watson gets a substantial suspension from the league. If it weren’t for Mayfield, it would have been Jacoby Brissett snapping behind center.

“I think when you look at the QB room, we have three good players in the most important positions in the sport,” Berry said. “That’s not to say we won’t get a lot done over the next few months, but I don’t see it as a bad situation at all. We feel like we have three good guys and a lot of teams are still looking for a guy, so you don’t mind going deep there and we’ll move on. ”

Teams waiting to land if Baker Mayfield is released

Mayfield’s tenure was a mixed bag in Cleveland. He’s had a stellar rookie campaign and led the team to their first post-season finish in nearly two decades in the 2020 season. However, last season Mayfield dropped just 17 touchdowns to 13. intercepts, missed when the team finished with the score 8-9.

Sure, though, some teams will be interested in the former overall pick. However, his price and the Browns’ lack of leverage made the situation difficult. Some are simply waiting to see if the Browns release Mayfield, according to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports.

Initially, the Browns were looking for a second-round pick for Mayfield and weren’t willing to eat some of his pay or give up the draft picks, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. It’s clear now with the teams lacking QB filling their positions that the initial price the Browns thought was unrealistic.
