The Cleveland Browns are set to find a pair of veteran quarterbacks in Josh Rosen and AJ McCarron before the start of training camp next week.
The Browns have entered the market for another quarterback and want to enter camp with four quarterbacks on the roster. Deshaun Watson, Jacoby Brissett and Joshua Dobbs are the three full-backs currently on the list. Uncertainty remains about Watson’s abilities for this season as the Browns await a decision from the NFL and the NFL Players Association’s jointly appointed disciplinary officer, Sue L. Robinson.
The QB workouts were first reported by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, who seemed to suggest that other passersby could also come to be looked at by the Browns.
“Cleveland Browns are working with quarterbacks this week, including veterans AJ McCarron and Josh Rosen,” Fowler tweeted. “Cleveland is looking to go to training camp with four defenders, with Jacoby Brissett becoming QB1 depending on what happens with Deshaun Watson’s condition.”
He added: “Deshaun Watson and Jacoby Brissett could basically be QB1 to start camp, but the bigger point is that the Browns will be preparing Brissett to play. So much of this gets on the air that it’s still unclear how much time Watson might miss. “
Rosen, McCarron walked around the NFL compound
After being selected by the Cardinals with a 10th overall pick in the 2018 draft, Rosen failed to find a permanent home in the NFL. He’s played for five different teams since his enlistment, most recently as supporter Matt Ryan in Atlanta.
Rosen won 3-10 starting in Arizona as a rookie, launching 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He was replaced by Kyler Murray the following year and has moved since.
Rosen had a gig with the Falcons last season after McCarron fell through with a torn ACL last season. Like Rosen, McCarron roamed the league. He has played with the Bengals, Raiders, Texans and Falcons on his record, starting three games against Cincinnati as a rookie in 2015. He unleashed six touchdowns and two interceptions in those games. that contest while completing 66.4% of his passes.
Browns commit to Brissett if Watson is absent
If Watson is suspended for any length, it is clear that Brissett will be first in line for the show to begin.
“I really trust Jacoby,” Stefanski said on June 14 at the mandatory minicamp “He played a lot of football stuff for a young player. He is a smart player. He takes care of football. Good size, can do all the throws and that. He committed many crimes. Our offense was a little bit different from what he did before but had a really, really good understanding of football – i.e. football intelligence – so I just thought he is a really good operator. “
Brissett will turn 30 this season and has hit 7,742 yards, 36 touchdowns and 17 interceptions in his career. He’s 14-23 as an NFL starter, though he doesn’t fall into the most appropriate situations.
The Browns are tougher on adding some competition for third place on the depth chart, which would add to the main backup should Watson be eliminated. The Browns now have Joshua Dobbs pen for that role. Dobbs, a former Steeler player, has completed just 10 of his 17 career dribbles at 45 yards and one interception.
