Jane Chapple-Hyam’s Saffron Beach will join William Buick to retain the title in the Royal Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes next weekend at Newmarket.
The filly clinched a first Group 1 win in the competition last season and added another top-level title to her resume this year when she won the Prix Rothschild at Deauville in August.
From there she sailed to Leopardstown for the Matron Stakes, another Group One, where she finished second to Paddy Twomey’s Pearls Galore.
Saffron Beach will be ridden on this occasion by Hollie Doyle, who has had the leg up on the chestnut twice before, and will this time be the steed of Buick – the same jockey who guided her to Sun Chariot success last year.
“William is back on board and they are a good winning combination. I’m sure he would like to win another Sun Chariot as much as Abington Place (Chapple-Hyams shipyard) so I’m sure he will do his best on board,” said the trainer.
“I think she’s a horse that jockeys can bond with quickly. When running, she is once in a straight line, when she starts, she can hold on.
“We’re lucky we had some of the best on her. We didn’t have a bad streak and they all did their best for her and they all enjoyed riding her.”
She added: “I weighed her Tuesday night and she was over 1,000 pounds. It tells you that she has the power and the strength.
“I think because she has strengthened and because we have separated her breeds we don’t have a lean machine but a beautiful developed mare who is good in that sense. She is now very strong in the front with strong shoulders.”
