Kevin Campbell joked “please no” at the prospect of Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka with Switzerland winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. as he told the Highbury Squad Podcast.
Switzerland has booked its golden flight ticket to the Middle East for November and wants to cause a stir, just like the European Championship.
At Euro 2020, the Swiss beat world champions France out of the competition, with Arsenal’s former captain Xhaka officiating the show in the middle of the park.
Over the years he has proven himself to be a Marmite-like figure in Arsenal colors but no one can dispute the level of performance and consistency he generates when donning his country’s colours.
Could there be a world where Switzerland is soccer world champion? And Xhaka holding up the famous golden trophy?
After Scottish commentator Derek Rae endorsed the Xhaka side as the ‘dark horses’ for the world’s biggest tournament, Campbell had this to say.
“Are you saying there could be a world where Xhaka could win the world title?” said host Sophie Nicolaou. “I love it. Absolutely brilliant.”
Campbell replied, “If you put it that way, Soph. Please do not.”
Many have quizzed Xhaka in north London over the years, but for this season his name may need some respect.
The 29-year-old excelled alongside Thomas Partey in the middle of the park and is showing serious signs he could potentially help them back to Champions League football.
The mood at the club has changed and Mikel Arteta transformed this previously struggling, weak, shy and aging squad.
Someone who is now defensively healthy, young, energetic, always moving forward and showing signs of his old offensive self.
