Speaking of Highbury Squad YouTube channelKevin Campbell has spoken out about Gabriel Martinelli and his place in this Arsenal team.

The Brazilian has been brilliant in recent weeks. Especially against Liverpool where he was incredible down the left despite losing to Arsenal.

But despite Martinelli’s exhilarating performances down the left, Campbell claims many want Martinelli to number ninth.

what was said

Campbell commented on Martinelli and shared what he heard.

“Smith Rowe came in and did well, especially in the first half. But Martinelli, we know he’s a threat, we know he can do some incredible things too,” Campbell said.

Campbell then spoke about Martinelli again later in the video.

“The rumor has it everyone wants Martinelli to play number nine, but Martinelli’s game isn’t about getting on your feet and connecting, especially in traffic. I would rather protect him. So if he’s playing as a nine, I think he needs to play alongside Lacazette, who does the grunt work.

Makes sense

Playing Martinelli as number nine makes a lot of sense. After all, this would allow Smith Rowe to return to his position on the left.

However, as Campbell says, Martinelli isn’t the best at falling between the lines and connecting the game, and he would need someone at his side to do that.

Unfortunately, that means another player in another position would have to be sacrificed to switch to a two-forward formation and that would result in another difficult decision for Mikel Arteta.

It remains to be seen where Martinelli will end up, but it certainly feels like his long-term future may not lie on the left wing.
