According to the Code of Canon LawCatholics over the age of 14 must abstain from meat on Good Friday.

It states: “Canon 1251. Abstinence from the consumption of meat or other foods, as prescribed by the Episcopal Conference, is to be observed on Fridays throughout the year, except on solemnities; Abstinence and fasting are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and on the Friday of the passion and death of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Is fasting compulsory?

Christians fast on Good Friday to honor Jesus for his suffering and death.

People refrain from eating meat on this occasion as it represents meat and reminds us of Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice.

Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 should fast on Good Friday.

However, the rules allow one person to eat a full meal. Some may also continue fasting until the Easter Vigil, which falls on the night of Holy Saturday.
