Carla Ling, the Bronx’s bullying school principal, is so rude she makes the staff cry on a daily basis

The principal of a New York school is said to be “so rude that she makes the staff sob every day”.

Carla Ling is the Director of PS/MS 20 in Norwood, Bronx. Yet her manners seem to dismay both her own employees and her superiors, leading to a petition being created urging her resignation from the role.

Indeed, Ling’s alleged antics make her more akin to the fictional character Miss Trunchball from Matilda, who rules her school with an iron fist but leaves staff and students cowering behind her.

Parents and staff have raised concerns and filed complaints with the New York City Department of Education about Ling’s alleged behavior, detailing how she regularly yells at students and harasses staff, making them cry every day.

But despite her alleged bullying, Ling has also been accused of negligent disciplining of rowdy students and letting some kids go around with impunity.

“We had a student who threw a stack of lockers down the stairs. If anyone had been hit by those lockers, they would have been killed. Children clogged drains. Kids do all kinds of crazy things. She doesn’t discipline any of them,” a New York Post staffer said.

Ling’s behavior was said to be so outlandish that it shocked the school district’s assistant superintendent and led to her being formally reprimanded in writing in a March 2022 letter presented to the Post.

Assistant Superintendent Fia Davis described Ling’s tone as “rude, sharp and brief. They interrupted me several times and cut me off,” she said during a phone call in February.

Davis also called Ling “inappropriate and unprofessional”.

“If you speak to your manager on this matter, I can only imagine how you speak to your subordinates,” Davis wrote, while noting how the director had “exhibited unprofessional behavior and disobedience.”

On another occasion, during a phone conversation with a Department of Education official, Davis became aware that Ling had also yelled at her on the line several times.

The report only supplemented several other complaints filed by members of the school community regarding Ling’s “tone and demeanor.”

A petition has now been created urging Ling to resign from her post. So far, 220 people have signed it, and some are sharing more horror stories.

“Our students are not getting the time they need to learn to read or write, and the animosity they see and hear on a daily basis is not only sad but frightening. Ms. Ling verbally abuses and humiliates her staff and teachers in front of students. Not to mention their behavior towards children and parents. People are afraid of her or afraid to handle her,” the petition reads.

“I and the majority of parents see Ms Ling yelling and yelling at the children and sometimes the parents inappropriately every morning upon arrival … she avoids us by locking herself in her office and will not speak to anyone, or out.” come to their office and speak to the parents in a disrespectful, nasty tone,” the petition continues.

“Your reign must end. She has created a hostile work environment that is detrimental to the mental health of all staff and students alike… This is gross negligence on the part of the New York City Department of Education.

“This so-called ‘leader’ is a tyrant who abuses and manipulates her power to evade responsibility.”

Ling has not yet commented on the allegations against her.
