Celtics assistant seen as lead for head coach position: Report

Celtics coaching staff

Boston Celtics head coach Ime Udoka is chatting with coaches.

After Quin Snyder stepped down as head coach of the Utah Jazz on June 5, 2022, the team searched for his replacement. Salt Lake Tribune’s Andy Larsen reported that of the candidates they’ve interviewed so far, it seems Boston Celtics assistant Will Hardy is leading the way to make their head coach contract.

Although former Celtics Basketball Executive Danny Ainge now works for Jazz, he and Hardy have no connection in Boston to each other. Hardy served as an assistant to the San Antonio Spurs before Ime Udoka made him an assistant shortly after the Celtics hired Udoka as their next head coach to replace Brad Stevens, who was promoted to Head of Ball Operations Ainge replacement basket. To paraphrase, Ainge was gone by the time Hardy was hired by Boston as an assistant.

Hardy is not the only Celtics assistant contacted by Jazz. On June 8, Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Jazz had been allowed to interview both Hardy and Joe Mazzula on their list of coaching candidates.

The former Celtics assistant also interviewed with Utah

Jazz interviewed coaches with current or former ties to the Celtics. On June 10, Wojnarowski reported that Jazz had been given permission to interview Jerome Allen.

Allen joined Stevens’ coaching staff in 2015 and remained with the team until 2021 when he left to work as assistant to Dwane Casey with the Detroit Pistons. Allen is not the only former Celtics assistant contacted by Jazz.

On June 8, Wojnarowski reported that the Jazz was scheduled to interview Frank Vogel, who served as assistant coach of the Celtics from 2001 to 2004.

Vogel is better known for his head coaching success with the Indiana Pacers and Los Angeles Lakers. Vogel helped lead the Lakers to their 17th championship as a franchise in 2020, but was fired by the Lakers after they failed to make it past the previous knockout round in 2022.

Former Celtics Players Interviewed with Utah

The Jazz have also made contact with the Celtics before, who have taken on the coaching job since the end of their game days.

On June 10, The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported that the Jazz had been given permission to interview Jason Terry, who currently coaches Grand Rapids Gold, the G League affiliate of the Denver Nuggets.

Terry played for the Celtics during the 2012-13 season, where he averaged 10.1 points, two rebounds and 2.5 assists. Terry was traded to the Brooklyn Nets the following summer along with Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett for the first picks and options swaps then transformed into Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

Charania then reported on June 15 that the Jazz was interviewing Sam Cassell, who is currently an assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76ers.

Cassell was signed by the Celtics as a free agent midway through the 2008 season. After winning the title with the Celtics that season, Cassell was re-signed by the club the following summer. He did not play a game for them before being traded to the Sacramento kings, where he later retired after the kings abandoned him.

The Jazz has interviewed many candidates, but it appears they have interviewed several coaches with ties to Boston.
