Because the Boston Celtics are expected to pass the luxury tax threshold, they will be allowed to use the expected mid-level taxpayer exception of $6.3 million. The Athletic’s Jay King listed 12 players the Celtics could target except for that mid-level exception this season. One of the top picks out of the 12 that King listed was Danilo Gallinari.

As of June 28, 2022, Gallinari is not a free agent, but the final year of his contract is only partially guaranteed for $4.5 million. King pointed out that, if Atlanta chooses to give him up this summer, the Celtics should target Gallinari because of his ability as a three-pointer.

At least for now, Gallinari still has a contract with the Atlanta Hawks. However, only $4.5 million of his $21.5 million deal is guaranteed. If the Hawks decide to give him up, he will instantly become one of the top scorers on the market. Although he will turn 34 before the season even begins and has limited defensive abilities even in his prime, he has shot 40% better at 3 points in 3 out of 4. last season. The defense needs to pay attention to him.

In the 2021-22 regular season, the Celtics shoot 35.6% from three shots, ranking 14th among NBA teams. That number increased to 37.3% in the knockout round, ranking fifth among those who qualified for the knockout round.

No matter where they will end up in the three-point shooting, Gallinari’s reliable long-distance shooting history suggests he will help the Celtics there.

Gallinari may decline

King later pointed out that Gallinari had scored his lowest point average since his first year in the league with the New York Knicks and that his defensive problems and old age may not have been good for him. Boston’s young core.

Gallinari’s impact was beginning to fade. He averaged 11.7 points per game last season, the lowest of his career excluding his rookie season of 2008-09. He’s not quite on par with all the full-backs in Boston’s rotation. He also plays power up front, where the Celtics should feel comfortable with Grant Williams supporting Al Horford. And Boston’s ideal freelance target would be younger to have the opportunity to grow with the core. So it won’t be a perfect fit.

King then added that despite Gallinari’s flaws, he is the one the Celtics should be aiming for because of what he will bring to the team.

Gallinari still deserves a spot near the top of this list if he gets his hands on free agency.

Even if he does, timing can make it difficult to pursue for any team, especially one with limited resources. This could be a long shot for a number of reasons, but Gallinari will help Boston’s offense.

Gallinari may soon be traded

WSB-TV Atlanta’s Zach Klein reports that many believe the Hawks are about to send Gallinari, along with multiple first-round picks, to the San Antonio Spurs to pick up Dejounte Murray.

Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer later confirmed Klein’s report while adding that there were discussions about increasing the partial guarantee in the final year of Gallinari’s contract before the end of the NBA league year.

Nothing has been reported as to whether the Spurs will keep Gallinari if the trade materializes. If they give him up, Gallinari will be on the open market for the Celtics to target.
