All indications are that Jae Crowder will be playing for a new team at the start of the 2022/23 season. The Athletic’s Shams Charania confirmed Crowder will part ways with his current team, the Phoenix Suns, as both sides will work together to find him a new home.
With the former Boston Celtics starter being placed on the trade market, Celtics fans have expressed approval of a potential reunion with Crowder five years after the Celtics traded him.
Others agree on a possible reunion based on everything the Celtics have been through in the last month or so.
While expressing approval of a potential deal, some suggested what they think the Celtics should offer the Suns for Crowder’s services.
Knowing where the Suns stand, they’ll likely want someone who can help them with their next playoff run rather than drafting assets.
Crowder was acquired by the Celtics in their return package when they traded Rajon Rondo to the Dallas Mavericks in 2014. In the 202 games Crowder played for them from 2015 to 2017, he averaged 12.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists while shooting 44.4 percent from the field and 35.3 percent from three , according to StatMuse.
Other Celtics fans are against Crowder Reunion
Other Celtics fans expressed their disapproval of the team’s potential reunion with Crowder.
They explained that they didn’t want him because they felt his ego was too big to take on a smaller role, which would likely be the case if he were brought back to Boston.
While Ryan Bernardoni said the Celtics aren’t getting Crowder back, he echoed a similar sentiment when he said Crowder would most likely want a starting role on the team he plays for, which is something he’s had since playing for them Celtics plays
Others pointed out that while Crowder has been part of winning teams in the past, he has hinted that his influence may not have been as great as some people think.
According to StatMuse, Crowder has played 56 playoff games in the last three years, which is the most among NBA players in that span. That’s thanks to Crowder, who played in back-to-back NBA Finals with the Miami Heat and Suns, respectively, in 2020 and 2021, though Crowder’s team never emerged victorious in either series.
Crowder sounds out in the next chapter
After Charania confirmed that Crowder was parting ways with the Suns, Crowder himself took to Twitter to express his thoughts on the matter.
Young NBA superstar Ja Morant, who was Crowder’s teammate during his freshman year in Memphis, quoted Crowder via Twitter and strongly implied that he would like Crowder back in Memphis.
Morant then cited video of Crowder hitting a buzzer beater three to help the Grizzlies beat the Brooklyn Nets in 2019.
Given his history with the team, Crowder could help the Grizzlies a lot if they managed to win him, but knowing that both the Suns and Grizzlies are in the Western Conference and hoping to win a title would be hard Suns trade Crowder for a team that could stand in the way of their goals.
