As the Boston Celtics prepare to embark on a very important season, they will have several ways to attract talent. One was through the NBA Draft, which went into effect, the other was using their $6.3 million MLE, and lastly, their multitude of commercial exceptions.
Boston’s biggest commercial exception is worth $17.1 million, which they acquired when Evan Fournier joined the New York Knicks last season. This opens up a lot of opportunities for the Celtics, who will likely be looking to add more depth to a team that just made it all the way to the NBA Finals.
One potential target the Celtics could pursue is the Atlanta Hawks’ Kevin Huerter. According to NBC Sports Boston’s Darren Hartwell, Huerter is someone the Celtics should seriously consider this summer with their TPE.
“Huerter and [Terrence] Ross are both attractive targets. The Celtics and Hawks are said to have discussed a deal involving Huerter and Smart back in February, and the 23-year-old’s wing could be effective from the bench,” said Hartwell. write.
As noted by Hartwell, Huerter is someone the Celtics have shown interest in before, and he could give them a boost from the bench. Although, their previous commercial discussions may not carry over to this season.
Celtics past interest in Huerter
On January 27, about two weeks before last year’s trade deadline, Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report reported that the Celtics and Hawks had discussed a deal to bring Marcus Smart to Atlanta in exchange for Huerter and Cam Reddish.
“Another interesting Hawks tidbit: Before Atlanta sent Reddish to New York, the Hawks and Celtics discussed a framework that could swap out Marcus Smart for Kevin Huerter and Reddish, sources said. It is not clear how far that dialogue has progressed,” Fischer wrote.
However, at this point, Smart probably won’t be in any commercial negotiations for Huerter. However, that does not mean that Huerter played poorly. Last season, the 23-year-old Hawks full-back averaged 12.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists with 45.4% of long shots and 38.9% of long-range shots.
But the real one to note is that Atlanta is said to be considering making big changes to their roster this summer.
The Hawks are looking to reshape the roster
According to Fischer, who reported the rumor May 24, the Hawks may be looking to make “wholesale changes” to their roster this summer, meaning everyone outside of Trae Young Everyone can participate in the transaction.
“Behind the scenes, league insiders always refer to Atlanta as a team ready to make wholesale changes. Rival executives consider all Hawks players except Trae Young to be eligible to trade,” Fischer said.
Atlanta made it to the Eastern Conference finals just two years ago, but after being beaten in the first round by the Miami Heat this year, they may be looking to straighten things out.
Young is their centerpiece, but if the Hawks end up looking for a place to break Huerter’s contract, the Celtics could come up with a deal to use their TPE.
