Celtics will need to include Jaylen Brown in trade for Kevin Durant

The Boston Celtics don’t need to be in the spotlight this summer. They’re getting close to the NBA Finals, and while they can’t get the job done, they’re still predicted to be a force to be reckoned with in the East for years to come.

However, just because the Celtics don’t need to make a splash doesn’t mean the opportunity won’t come. Just recently, it was reported by Shams Charania by The Athletic that Kevin Durant is weighing his options regarding the possibility of leaving the Brooklyn Nets (in turn with Kyrie Irving’s current controversy with the team).

With that in mind, people are scrambling to come up with potential commercial packages for Durant. CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn has written an article detailing potential contracts for every team, and for Boston, he notes that winger Jaylen Brown will almost certainly be involved.

“Jayson Tatum is not the question for Boston. He’s only played better than Durant in four games. But Jaylen Brown’s tackle led to a number of rotation problems that saw the Celtics suffer in the knockout stages. That’s not a problem for Durant,” Quinn wrote.

Brown averaged 3.1 spins during his post-season run in Boston, and while Durant averaged more in the first round with the Celtics, that was merely due to his volume. At this point, he is clearly a better ball handler than Brown.

Quinn noted that, if the Celtics had had Durant last year, they would have likely won it all.

Durant’s Impact on the Celtics

In his explanation, Quinn said that replacing Brown with Durant on the Boston Finals roster would have helped them win the championship. Plus, it will give them two of the best shooters in the league.

“Boston can combine its best defense in the league with a sudden attack that uses an elite second shooter,” explains Quinn. “Boston could have won it all with Durant in Brown’s place.”

Last season, Durant averaged 29.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 6.4 assists with 51.8% of shots from long range and 38.3% of shots from long range. That being said, he only appeared in 55 games for Brooklyn as he dealt with an injury midway through the season.

Plus, while adding Durant to the team sounds like the perfect plan in terms of value, there are certainly some question marks as to whether he would be interested in coming to Boston.

Durant’s Potential Interests in Boston

When discussing potential drawbacks, Quinn mentions that Durant may not have heard great things about Boston, especially considering his close relationship with Kyrie Irving, who had fallen out with him. Celtics and is no longer a fan favorite.

“Somehow, I suspect Irving has dedicated Durant to a particularly brilliant review of Boston. Even if the Celtics do make this swap, who knows how much Durant will care,” Quinn said.

Durant was interested in joining the Celtics in 2016 before he signed with the Golden State Warriors. And all these years later, if he shows interest again, Celtics fans will probably love having him.

But what if Brown would have to be included in the deal? That’s where things get complicated.
