There were many issues for the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3, but the good news is that some of those weaknesses can be easily fixed.
For example, the game played by the special teams contributed significantly to this defeat. Arrowhead Pride reporter Pete Sweeney actually named it the “worst performance by a special team I can recall from a group coached by Dave Toub in a long time.”
On the plus side, part of the problem was a chain reaction caused by Harrison Butker’s injury and a lack of confidence in replacement Matt Ammendola. However, the Chiefs starting kicker should be back in action either this week or next when he recovers from an ankle sprain on his non-kicking leg. So the only question is whether or not Kansas City needs a new kicker for an important week 4 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
According to Sweeney and most KC media, Ammendola will likely be cleaning out his locker either way.
Chiefs expected to release K Matt Ammendola after Week 3
“In his first relief game against Harrison Butker (against the Los Angeles Chargers), Matt Ammendola was perfect,” Sweeney noted in the same Article after the game. “Against the Colts on Sunday he was far from it. Ammendola missed an extra point to start the game, resulting in the Chiefs betting two after their next touchdown. After a 26-yarder, Ammendola missed from 34 in the fourth quarter – leading to head coaches Andy Reid and Toub later calling for a false field goal attempt… The Chiefs also had a game delay penalty assessed on a field goal.
All of those critical kicking errors and decisions obviously came back to haunt Kansas City, considering them lost the game by three measly points scored on a last-second touchdown drive by the Indianapolis Colts.
Sweeney concluded that “next week the kicker will be either Butker or someone whose name isn’t Ammendola” — a strong statement that implies the fill-in’s release from the practice team.
ESPN’s Adam Teicher agreed that “the decision to fake a field goal [the] fourth quarter against Colts appeared to be a serious lack of confidence in Ammendola,” and Chiefs Wire’s Ed Easton Jr. commented also to the situation.
“Ammendola didn’t do himself any favors by looking forward to impressing others [NFL] Teams,” Easton wrote on Sept. 26. “The Chiefs passing kicker didn’t seem comfortable in Week 3… Expect Ammendola to be released promptly when Harrison Butker is capable of kicking in Week 4 anyway.”
That last bit is a guarantee, but it’ll be interesting to see what head coach Andy Reid and general manager Brett Veach will do if Butker can’t face the Bucs.
Andy Reid gives no indication of Matt Ammendola’s status
Coach Reid did address the media On Monday, the 26th, however, he did not give any concrete update on Ammendola and the situation at kicker.
“I can’t tell you that just yet,” Reid replied when asked if he had new insurance with kicker in Tampa Bay. “Bretts [Veach] to think about all this and work through it now.”
A small silver lining, Reid said the team has no new injuries in Week 4.
