“As we went about our business, youth began throwing snowballs at McDonalds, coming very close to hitting officials and members of the public in the face.

“We will NOT consent to a snowball fight and will take positive action against anyone who has been identified attempting to attack officers.

“Officers will be on duty all weekend and behavior of this nature will NOT be tolerated.”

The disengagement order means anyone suspected of causing antisocial behavior will be ordered to leave a designated area. Anyone who does not follow the instructions of the police risks being arrested.

The order came into effect at 3am this morning and is under review with the possibility that it will continue throughout the weekend, police said.

And heavy snowfall is expected to sweep across Britain again this weekend after temperatures dropped to minus 15.2C last night.

Amber weather warnings have been issued for large parts of the country as Storm Larisa battered parts of the UK with 80mph gales and snowstorms.

Delays and cancellations are to be expected as a result, with the Met Office saying buses, trains and flights could be affected.

Drivers were also urged to avoid getting behind the wheel with the possibility that more vehicles could be left stranded in the treacherous conditions.

A yellow snow and ice warning covers much of northern England and southern Scotland until 6am Sunday.
