In the hottest moment of the 94th Academy Awards, Will Smith slapped Chris Rock onstage. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the comedian has declined to press charges against the Oscar winner.
“LAPD investigative authorities are aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards program.” the LAPD spokesman said in a statement obtained by numerous news outlets. “In the incident, one person hit another. The person concerned declined to make a complaint to the police. If the party involved desires a police report at a later date, the LAPD is available to complete an investigative report.”
During the live broadcast, Rock joked that Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, would be starring in GI Jane II before presenting the award for Best Documentary.
His comments appear to be related to Pinkett Smith’s balding, which she previously revealed is due to her alopecia. The main character in 1997’s ‘GI Jane’ famously shaves her head while training to join the US Navy.
Although the moment was beeped in the United States, foreign broadcasts saw the moment unedited. A clip of the moment was shared on Instagram by Amanda Hirsch, the host of the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast.
“Wow, Will Smith just blew me away,” Rock said as Smith walked away. He added, “Wow dude that was a GI Jane joke.”
Smith repeatedly replied, “Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth.”
“I will, okay,” he added. “Okay, that was the biggest night in television history. So we’re here to release a documentary.”
Smith apologized to “the Academy” and his “fellow nominees” during the acceptance speech
Smith stayed until the end of the ceremony and won Best Actor for his role in King Richard. During his acceptance speech, Smith apologized but never named Rock.
“I want to apologize to the academy, I want to apologize to my fellow candidates.” poster quotes a Smith with tears in his eyes “This is a beautiful moment and I’m not crying because I won an award. I don’t care about winning a prize. It’s about being able to illuminate all people… Art mimics life. I look like the crazy dad, just like they said I would… just like they said I would about Richard Williams. Love will make you do crazy things.”
He continued, “Thank you, I hope the Academy invites me back.” The incumbent winners are usually invited as presenters the following year.
The Oscars made a statement about “violence in any form”.
The Academy of Motion Pictures issued a statement on Twitter in the early hours of March 28, 2022.
“The Academy does not condone violence” read her tweet. “Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Oscar winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and film lovers around the world.”
Viewers didn’t buy the statement, with tweets admonishing both Smith and Rock.
As one person tweeted“Offending someone by joking about their physical condition in front of millions of people is also a form of violence, you know.”
But, read another tweet“You tolerated it. They allowed Will Smith to sit there and then presented a grand prize, which he accepted with a bizarre speech trying to excuse his attack.”
Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter offered what he felt was a more appropriate testimony. He tweeted, “‘What happened at the ceremony tonight was unacceptable. It should never have happened and at the moment we have not been able to react decisively and we regret the way an already unfortunate situation has been handled. Our apologies to tonight’s winners and to the entire industry.’”
