Chris Smith has been suspended after Sky News’ Christmas party with Sharri Markson and Laura Jayes at The Ivy

Some of Australia’s media industry’s biggest names have given an insight into Sky News’ now infamous Christmas party in the hours before TV veteran Chris Smith was allegedly left in tears by a colleague and hit by another for her “inappropriate behaviour”.

Smith, 60, will not host his Sunday night show for Sky News and his contract with 2GB Radio has been suspended as both stations investigate the allegations against him.

Smith partied with colleagues at Sky News’ year-end celebrations at The Ivy Sunroom in Sydney around 12pm on Saturday, before the group continued the party at The Establishment, a bar next door.

There, Smith is accused of touching a young co-worker, making lewd remarks, leaving another woman in tears and behaving inappropriately towards several other co-workers.

A colleague reportedly hit Smith for his alleged behavior.

Now new details about the news organization’s lavish party have emerged after Sky News Australia’s own staff took to social media to post videos and images from the high-profile event on Instagram.

While the night reportedly ended on a sour note for some, the Instagram highlights collection reveals that the night started with a bang as media personalities sipped drinks and enjoyed dancing with colleagues up close.

Columnist and TV host Rita Panahi posted clips to her Instagram Story showing two smiling and giggling colleagues dancing to Latto’s “Big Energy” on either side of Outsiders co-host James Morrow.

Over the course of the night, Panahi continued to add photos of herself posing with her colleagues, including Gabriella Power and Jules Bradley.

Panahi also showed off the liquor-heavy bar, with shelves full of liquor and wine bottles and glasses on the counter.

Panahi’s celebrations ended with a stroll near City Hall before indulging in some Connoisseur biscuits and ice cream at her hotel, a fruit platter breakfast the next morning and a flight from Sydney back to Melbourne.

News anchor and weather presenter Jaynie Seal shared footage of her taking group selfies with colleagues in front of a Sky News media wall – including Sarah Kazzi and James Morrow – as she and her colleagues danced in the Ivy Sunroom in the afternoon.

“We’re going to be on Instagram,” Jaynie says as the camera pans to the bustling crowd filling the room behind her.

“Oh, that’s a video,” says another Sky employee as the camera points to his face.

Political reporter Laura Jayes and TV presenter Sharri Markson also took to the internet to share snaps of themselves at the work event as they posed with fellow female colleagues, including Ashleigh Gillon.

“Bundle of hotties right there,” one man commented on Jayes’ post.

“You guys are supermodels,” said another.

TV presenter Paul Murray, who hosts a nightly show on the network, was also in attendance and posted a photo of himself smoking a cigar at the event.

“Great day out with my TV family,” he wrote.

Smith reportedly left the establishment around 7:30 p.m.

Some of Smith’s Sky News colleagues told the Daily Telegraph he was in one “fragile” condition after his wife, celebrity nutritionist Susie Burrell, left the family home with their two sons last week.

Smith was due to host a nightly show on Sky News Australia at 5pm as part of the network’s 2023 lineup.

As part of the suspension, the veteran broadcaster will also not be filling in for Ben Fordham on the 2GB breakfast show from Monday morning after Fordham goes on holiday.

2GB confirmed Smith would not be on the air pending an investigation into his conduct.

“2GB has been made aware of serious allegations against Chris Smith arising from Sky News’ Christmas party,” a spokesman said.

“Sky has said they are conducting an investigation. Chris has been withdrawn from his duties at 2GB pending the investigation.’

A spokesman for Sky News Australia told Daily Mail Australia: “The individual concerned has been suspended pending an investigation into the allegations.”

“The well-being of our employees is our top priority. We have a zero-tolerance approach to inappropriate behavior and take these allegations very seriously.”

It’s not the first time Smith has been suspended following allegations of improper conduct.

He was suspended from the Macquarie Radio Network in 2009 after allegations were made at a 2GB Christmas party by female colleagues.

Smith was accused of exposing himself to several women, attempting to kiss a colleague and assaulting then-Network 10 weather presenter Magdalena Roze.

He was fired as a producer on A Current Affair in the late 1990s after exposing himself to two co-workers at a company party.

The incident was initially laughed at by Smith’s bosses, but the women complained to the Nine Network and Smith was fired.

Both women left the show and were rumored to have secured big payouts.

In another incident, Smith caressed the breasts of a senior journalist.

Smith presents the weekend radio show The Chris Smith Show on 2GB and the current show Chris Smith Tonight on Sky News Australia.
