Christian Barmore

The New England Patriots got some bad news and then good news about an injury for Christian Barmore.

ESPN’s Mike Reiss tweeted:

Hours later, the news looked a little better after some initial tests of Barmore’s knee were performed. This is good news, according to’s Ian Rapoport, but the exact word won’t come until Barmore has an MRI.

Hopefully Barmore’s injury isn’t too severe. It looks like he won’t be available to play in the Patriots’ Wildcard weekend game against the Buffalo Bills.

This couldn’t be a more ideal development for the Patriots roster, but more than that, hopefully Barmore isn’t seriously injured. He’s the highest-ranked rookie domestic defender in the NFL this year according to Pro Football Focus.

While the Patriots would love to have him on the field, at this point – especially based on the initial view of the injury – many smart fans will be happy if Barmore’s recovery doesn’t last until. Season.

How did Christian Barmore’s injury happen?

The rookie defender who had a major impact on the team’s defence was injured in the biggest game of the game in the Patriots’ 33-24 loss to the Miami Dolphins in Week 18.

Barmore was chasing Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa as he contested the first fall that marked Miami’s win. Barmore was unable to catch Fins’ nimble QB and his teammate Joejuan Williams collided with him when both Patriots were unable to take down Tagovailoa before he landed the first kill.

Patriots will miss Barmore if he misses time

Bill Belichick was full of praise for rookie DT’s performance and work ethic. Last month, he spoke to the media about some of the positive aspects of Barmore’s game.

Belichick told members of the local media: “I have to give that kid a lot of credit. “He came early. Delay. Works on his flexibility. His strength. His technique. He really applied himself. He’s doing better and better every week. ”

If Barmore can’t play Saturday when the Patriots head back to Orchard Park for Tuesday’s meeting with the Bills, expect this week’s practice team’s Daniel Ekuale to get some time in the position. New England don’t have depth in position and they also don’t have a lot of body in their training lineup to focus on depth.

If Barmore is going to be out all season – assuming the Patriots get the Bills – New England may need to add a player or two to their training lineup to make sure they have enough bodies.

Stay tuned as this will be one of the biggest stories of the week leading up to the playoff game against the Bills.
