Christina Applegate revealed she’s gained 40 pounds since being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
The 50-year-old actress, who shared her diagnosis in August 2021, reflected on the struggles she was experiencing filming the final season of her Netflix show Dead to Me amid her struggle.
“This is the first time anyone has seen me for who I am. I gained 40 pounds; I can’t walk without a cane. I want people to know that I’m very aware of all of this,” she said in a new interview with The New York Times.

Applegate was diagnosed with MS during production of the show’s final season, which then took a five-month hiatus to begin her treatment.
Multiple sclerosis is a disease in which the immune system eats away at the protective covering around nerves, disrupting the flow of information between the brain and body.
The anchorman star said of filming last season: “I had a commitment. The powerful said, “Let’s just stop. We don’t have to end it. Let’s put some episodes together [with previously recorded footage].” I said no. We’ll do it, but we’ll do it on my terms.

Applegate also shared that when production on the show — which earned her two Emmy nominations — paused, “There was a feeling of, ‘Well, let’s get her some medicine to make her feel better.’
However, the actress added that “there’s nothing better,” saying, “I’ll never accept that. I’m p***ed.’
Ultimately, the break was “good” for her: “I had to process my loss of my life, my loss of this part of me. So I needed that time. Though it’s not like I got away on the other side, like, “Woohoo, I’m totally fine.”

The Los Angeles-born beauty also shared that looking back, there were some signs of the illness while speaking about losing her balance in a dance scene in season one.
“I wish I’d been paying attention. But who should I know?’ She said.
The star shared that when she returned, she needed a wheelchair to get to the set due to her limited mobility and required a sound engineer to hold her legs up to make certain recordings.

She also shared that she couldn’t take pictures of her entering a room because she would need help and that she would lean against doors while standing to be able to stay up.
The Married With Children star also said she’s not sure if she’ll watch the final season as it’s too painful, but that she wants to finish filming for her co-star Linda Cardellini and series creator Liz Feldman.
“If people hate it, if people love it, if all they can focus on is, ‘Ooh, look at the cripple,’ that’s not on me. I’m sure people will say, “I can’t get over it.” Well, then, don’t get over it. But hopefully people can get over it and just enjoy the ride and say goodbye to these two girls,” she said.

WHAT IS Multiple Sclerosis?
Multiple sclerosis (known as MS) is a disease in which the immune system attacks the body, causing nerve damage in the brain and spinal cord.
It is an incurable, lifelong condition. Symptoms can be mild in some and more extreme in others, leading to severe disability.
MS affects 2.3 million people worldwide – including about 1 million in the US and 100,000 in the UK.
It is more than twice as common in women as in men. A person is usually diagnosed in their 20s and 30s.
The condition is more commonly diagnosed in people of European descent.
The cause is not clear. There may be genes involved, but it’s not directly inherited. Smoking and low vitamin D levels are also associated with MS.
Symptoms include tiredness, difficulty walking, blurred vision, bladder problems, numbness or tingling, muscle stiffness and spasms, problems with balance and coordination, and problems with thinking, learning, and planning.
The majority of those affected will have episodes of symptoms that come and go, while some will have those that gradually worsen over time.
Symptoms can be managed with medication and therapy.
The disease shortens the average life expectancy by about five to ten years.
