Christina Ricci and Elijah Wood are a perfect detective duo

Walter is just as odd as Misty – suspicious of authority, theatrical, and enthusiastic about the thrill of underhanded detective work. The scene where Misty has to feed Walter questions into headphones is one of the funniest moments of the season so far. It shows Christina Ricci and Elijah Wood’s impeccable comic timing as they talk to each other in sizzling whispers and frantically prepare for Randy’s arrival.
The juxtaposition of their interrogation methods is hilarious: Misty hisses at Walter to hit Randy and “go hunting,” but he is calmer and gentler, and would rather use kindness and patience to get information out of Randy. The difference between their investigative styles will inevitably add to the excitement of any future mystery journeys they undertake.
Another reason their relationship is so compelling is that it confronts Misty’s feelings as an outsider. Misty longs to be accepted by others, but when she finally meets someone who really likes her, she feels uncomfortable and insecure. Christina Ricci lets her insecurity towards Walter appear authentic in her stilted gestures and facial expressions. The only thing Misty is confident about is her detective and survival skills, and it’s fascinating to see that confidence challenged by someone else.
Misty’s fussy demeanor contrasts with Walter’s laid-back, seemingly cordial qualities, and it’s this difference that makes their partnership exciting. Elijah Wood has such an endearing presence that works well against the tough shell Christina Ricci puts on Misty. It will be fascinating to see if Walter can break it. By giving Misty someone new to bounce off of during her investigation, Yellowjackets creates a story with greater suspense and excitement – especially when Walter discovers the truth about Adam. Her buddy-detective dynamic deepens Misty’s quest for acceptance and emphasizes her weirdness.
