Dancing With the Stars judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli and Len Goodman

Longtime Dancing With the Stars judge Bruno Tonioli used to double duty, serving as a judge on both the UK version of the show Strictly Come Dancing and its US counterpart. But when the pandemic restricted international travel, he resigned from Strictly. However, now that travel restrictions have been lifted, Bruno hasn’t returned to Strictly and it sounds like one of his former colleagues is hoping the change is permanent.

Longtime judge Craig Revel Horwood said he hopes Bruno’s replacement “comes back next year”.

Speak with The sunCraig Revel Horwood, who has been a judge on Strictly Come Dancing since its inception, said Bruno’s replacement, professional dancer Anton Du Beke, is a great addition to the program and he hopes Anton stays on.

“I’m already happy about that [Anton] is finally a judge,” Craig said, adding, “I was glad they got him off the dance floor and then put him where he belongs. I hope he comes back next year. I loved it, absolutely.”

Anton was a pro on the show for its first 18 seasons, then the show moved Anton in Bruno’s place for season 19, which aired September through December 2021. Craig said he hopes Anton will return for season 20, which sounds like it means Bruno is finally done with the show.

Bruno was part of the “Strictly Come Dancing” tour 2022

In early 2022, it looked like Bruno would return to “Strictly Come Dancing” because he was part of the live tour. The Strictly tour differs from the Dancing With the Stars tour in that it includes the judges, so Craig, Bruno and their colleague Shirley Ballas were all part of the tour.

But shortly after the tour, a report broke off The sun said that the executives were happy with Anton’s work as a judge and had no intention of bringing Bruno back, particularly because it cost a little less for the show to hire Anton.

The BBC source told The Sun:

We have been told that Anton’s contract as a judge will be renewed. The bosses were very satisfied with his performance.

They also noticed that his salary is significantly lower than Bruno’s. Bruno has been a fixture on Strictly for more than a decade, and the show shows him a great deal of affection.

The source also said that this decision would “ruffle some feathers,” particularly with Craig, because Craig has been “a very, very vocal supporter of welcoming Bruno back.”

However, based on Craig’s recent comments, it sounds like he’s changed his tune and hopes Anton will be brought back for season 20.

Bruno hasn’t directly addressed his situation with returning or not returning to Strictly Come Dancing, but following The Sun’s February 2022 report of Strictly executives wanting to keep Anton, he did posted a photo on Instagram of the entire cast of the “Strictly” tour, who thanked his fans for the kind words.

“Thank you for all your messages, your response was amazing, I enjoyed every minute of this tour, it was a pleasure to work with the most wonderful, talented and professional company,” wrote Bruno.

Dancing With the Stars has not yet been renewed for season 31. If extended, it will return in September 2022. Strictly Come Dancing will premiere its 20th season in fall 2022.
