Antonio Conte spoke at Tuesday’s press conference Before Tottenham’s clash with Brighton, Oliver Skipp was “disappointed”, as he struggled to return from a groin injury. Conte said it was something he had never experienced.
Skipp, 21, was a key player under Nuno Espirito Santo and Conte before picking up a muscle injury – which became infected. The Spurs academy product has now missed seven games in a row.
He will also miss Wednesday night’s game against Brighton – the team Spurs beat 3-1 in the FA Cup earlier in the year. Spurs are favorites to bounce back from defeat to Manchester United and secure a win.
Speaking on Tuesday afternoon to Football London, Conte said Skipp’s injury was something he had never experienced. He also explained that the England player is feeling ‘frustrated’ that he is skipping his time.
“This is the first time I have encountered an unexpected situation. He’s a player we need, but at this point, no one is trying to tell me when he’s ready. He’s really frustrated, he’s young and a really good guy,” Conte said.
Conte on Skipp: Tottenham need a hard-working trump in midfield
Since Conte’s arrival, Tottenham have won 9/18 Premier League matches. Skipp has started six of the eight games he has available – and in those six, Spurs have picked up 16 points from a possible 18.
In those six games, Spurs have conceded just two goals – both against Leicester in a 3-2 win. In their last seven games, with Skipp sidelined with a groin problem, Spurs have nine points from 21 – conceding 11.
Skipp is very important. He may not be the most luxurious, eye-catching player – but he is important in the way Conte wants to play.
