Cory Wharton & Taylor Selfridge’s daughter has been discharged from hospital

Teen Mom OG alums Cory Wharton and Taylor Selfridge have had a very rough start to the new year. The couple spent 13 of the first days of 2023 in the cardiothoracic intensive care unit with their youngest daughter Maya, who had to undergo open-heart surgery to help correct it tricuspid atresia (a congenital heart defect in which a heart valve does not fully develop, which can prevent proper blood flow in the heart and limit the flow of oxygen throughout the body).

On January 18, 2023, the couple shared that they were finally able to bring Maya home from the hospital as she continues to recover from her surgery and post-operative complications. Both reality TV stars posted to Instagram to celebrate the good news and share the details of their 13-day hospitalization.

Maya Wharton required a second operation after experiencing low oxygen levels

Taylor Selfridges Instagram post contained several photos of Maya during her hospital stay, and the caption described her time in the ICU while Selfridge and boyfriend Cory Wharton waited with their daughter.

After 13 VERY long days at CTICU we are home! 🤍😭 On January 4th Maya had her Glenn (open heart) surgery, everything went well but during the recovery process they couldn’t figure out why Maya’s oxygen wouldn’t go up. On January 10, Maya ended up back in the OR for a cath lab procedure because they thought they needed to place another stent or do some things there to help with her oxygen. But that wasn’t the case, they didn’t find anything to do, which was good, but she was back on a ventilator for the second time in 6 days and that was very difficult to watch. The day after she came off her second ventilator, she had an episode of suspected pulmonary hypertension, which may have been the cause of her oxygen drop, and I watched her monitor keep dropping as a lot of doctors came into her room…the fear that I had was something I’ve never felt before. Maya will go home on oxygen for now.

Cory also shared this information his Instagram post and included a message of gratitude not only to the doctors who worked hard to bring Maya back to health, but also to everyone who shared well wishes throughout the process. “I want to say thank you again to everyone who supported and prayed for us during this time. Sorry if I didn’t get back to your messages, I was a little stressed 😰 Love you all ❤️,” Cory wrote.

Maya Wharton has another ‘major’ surgery ahead of her

Although Cory Wharton and Taylor Selfridge are celebrating bringing Maya home from the hospital as she continues to recover from her Glenn procedure, Taylor confirmed that her daughter “still has a big one.” [heart surgery] gone, but please God not for a few years”.

Cory and Taylor previously discussed Maya’s treatment plan Youtube channelwhere Taylor confirmed the next step after this month’s Glenn trial is a Fontan trial.

According to Mayo Clinic, “The Glenn procedure sets the stage for a more permanent corrective surgery called the Fontan procedure,” which creates a way to correct blood flow. The Fontan procedure is usually performed when patients are between two and five years old and has a promising short- and medium-term perspective.
