Council finalizes the much-disapproved 5G mast plans at Dentons Green

PLANS to install a 5G mast on a residential street, which drew numerous objections, were rejected.

CK Hutchison Networks (UK) Ltd submitted proposals to St Helens Council in the autumn to install a 15m monopole on Dentons Green.

The plans applied for permission to erect the mast on Rainford Road near the junction of Walton Road near Hard Lane.

The application states: “The site has been identified as necessary for the business development of CK Hutchison Networks (UK) Ltd and meets its specific technical and operational requirements.”

However, the plans resulted in dozens of letters of objection being filed with the local council against the plans by residents and local councillors.

Some local residents have expressed environmental concerns about the proposals.

One said, “I disapprove of the appearance of the mast. It will spoil the view, it will not fit in with the environment, and it will affect the enjoyment of the neighborhood for local residents.”

In a report recommending that the application be denied, planning officer Natasha Ayres said: “The pole would be highly visible in the street scene and would appear overly visually intrusive in that context.

“The mast would have a visually dominant presence in views from the public space due to a combination of its large height and column width and the bulky and visibly different head frame design relative to the supporting column.

“The proposed structure would not visually integrate with the nearby street lighting due to its significantly greater height and column width.”

It added that the pole would “sit just below the height of the existing (protected) mature trees, which would also detract from their character and important presence” and “appear as a strong, incongruous feature within the street scene”.

Permission was refused by the Council.

A decision notice states: “The proposal would adversely affect the character and appearance of the area.

“The proposal would not respect the site and its surroundings or contribute positively to the appearance of the public space”. Council finalizes the much-disapproved 5G mast plans at Dentons Green
