In a new list put together by members of the national media, Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is being ranked as the worst NFL head coach to win a Super Bowl.
The rankings are published by Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports, but include the opinions of several of the outlet’s writers. The list includes all 32 NFL head coaches, but it’s remarkable how far McCarthy’s name has dropped.
The Cowboys head coach was named the number 18 coach in the NFL, being the lowest of any coach to have won the Super Bowl. The article on McCarthy feels like it begins with acknowledging praise but still criticizing his ability as a coach.
“The pendulum may have gone too far in criticizing McCarthy; even when he has Aaron Rodgers at Green Bay, he has now compiled nine different double-digit seasons, including 2021 with Dallas,” the CBS Sports listing reads. “He also wisely gave a lot of control to caller Kellen Moore. However, with so much of his talent, old-fashioned, ill-timed decisions often make him suffer. Perhaps that’s why team owner Jerry Jones publicly weighed in on boxing him for his own defensive coordinator. “
McCarthy has been a divisive figure among Cowboys fans since his arrival in January 2020, but it’s clear that CBS Sports doesn’t appreciate him with his number 18 rating.

Super Bowl Coach Ranked Above McCarthy
The first Super-Bowl-winning head coach to rank above McCarthy was Doug Pederson, who was hired by the Jacksonville Jaguars this season. Pederson’s earlier stint with the Philadelphia Eagles resulted in winning the Lombardi Trophy during the 2017 season.
Pederson is in 11th place, while the next coach on the list with the ring is Seattle Seahawks HC Pete Carroll. Carroll, who ranks as the 8th best NFL head coach, is entering his 13th season in Seattle, and has drawn 1-1 in his Super Bowl games.
The top 5 coaches on the CBS Sports list are all Super Bowl winners, starting with John Harbaugh in 5th, who is leading the Ravens in their 15th season and has a Super Bowl ring. bear his name. Pittsburgh Steelers HC Mike Tomlin is in 4th place with a 1-1 record in the Super Bowls.
New England Patriots HC Bill Belichick finished in 3rd despite six titles, the most of any NFL head coach in the history of the league. In second place, Sean McVay of the Los Angeles Rams was named after his first Super Bowl win this past February.
At number 1, Kansas City Chiefs boss Andy Reid leads the list. Interestingly, he is the only coach on the list to have a record of losing in the Super Bowls, with a score of 1-2.
Eagles’ Nick Sirianni tops bronze cowboy
Of the NFC East coaches, McCarthy isn’t ranked the worst, but the Cowboys head coach isn’t ranked at the top either. The leaderboard has Washington Commanders HC Ron Rivera and New York Giants HC Brian Daboll, below McCarthy at 19th and 22nd respectively.
However, Nick Sirianni’s Eagles HC ranked 16th, two places ahead of McCarthy. Advice for the Eagles coach says his growing relationship with quarterback Jalen Hurts and his openness to adapt are his key points.
The logic isn’t wrong, but it still feels comfortable to rank an NFL coach with an NFL season under his belt and no playoff win over McCarthy, who is entering his 16th season and has won the Lombardi Cup.
