The Cleveland Browns apparently ignored the Dallas Cowboys when they traded for Amari Cooper in March, and owner Jerry Jones insulted his former wide receiver afterward.

More than two months after Dallas shipped Cooper to Cleveland for the moderate price of a fifth-round draft pick and sixth-round swap, Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Clarence Hill recounted some of the harsh words Jones said. , instructed in the four Pro Bowl expansions.

“However, owner Jerry Jones does not believe the team will take a step back at the top [wide receiver] Coporation, group. Jones told Star-Telegram that CeeDee Lamb would be an upgrade over Cooper as the true #1 recipient of Cowboys offense,” Hill wrote May 26.

“Jones said he was [not] trying to mitigate Cooper, whom the team traded in March in part because his production didn’t match his $20 million practice card,” Hill continued. “But Jones admits Cooper has his issues and Lamb has the potential to be a more complete No. 1 receiver in ‘production, in group chat and off the pitch.’

Then, during his press conference on July 26, Jones spoke to Cooper again. This time, his attack on receiver durability is broad compared to the salary he currently commands.

When you get in there [financial] spot, I can tell you, your standards go up. Your bar is higher. Your conduct is higher. Your attention to the team is higher, not just your own performance, but everything when you have such responsibility, when you have so much financial pie.

What I mean is that those decisions are made based on availability rather than ability. They have been created the way you come which are not available at times. … But more important than anything are the decisions we’ve made, I’ve made, regarding the top players who aren’t here, have everything to do with their availability. and my concerns about their availability.

Cooper’s reaction to Jones’ initial comments was a sort of passive-aggressive social media challenge a few weeks later.

The extender posted a photo on his Instagram page of the route he ran in a Browns uniform. Captions are two simple words: “Just watch.”

Cooper also spoke on the radio recently, with Dallas The Ticket 96.7, in which he took the high road by praising his former teammate Lamb.

Cooper said: “CeeDee is a playboy, you know. “He is ready. He will be playing when his number is called, and I can’t wait to see that happen. He is a player. He can go up and take it after the catch, no matter the situation.”

Jones’ comments on Cooper’s readiness are not watery in retrospect in what has been a successful and largely enduring career.

Cooper played seven years in the NFL between the Las Vegas Raiders (formerly of Oakland) and the Cowboys. During that time, he has appeared in at least 14 regular season games per campaign, according to Pro Football Reference.

The wide receiver appeared in nine games for the Cowboys after being traded by the Raiders in 2018, after appearing in six competitions for Oakland that year. Over the next three seasons with Dallas, Cooper missed just two games. Both of those things happened last season and were related to a positive COVID-19 test.

Cooper will make $60 million over the next three years, although the Browns have restructured his contract to make the salary cap lower in 2022. He joined the quarterback trio three times. Pro Bowl’s Deshaun Watson as the commercial addition to this year’s roster and will likely prove Watson’s top goal in the passing game as they both come onto the field.

Rookie David Bell will make a case for #2 in the wide receiver, while Donovan Pe People’s-Jones is expected to complete the starting lineup in this position. Anthony Schwartz will likely be the fourth wide receiver on the depth chart and the first to come off the bench on Sunday. Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Rips New Browns WR Amari Cooper
