David Bowie: “He fought Star’s 18 month battle like a lion – hard to spot symptoms
The star passed away just two days after the release of his 26th studio album, Blackstar. In the hours after his death, memorials to the star were created around the world, including in Brixton, London, the singer’s birthplace. The Heroes singer’s death was made all the more shocking because he didn’t publicly announce his liver cancer diagnosis, only telling his closest friends and family about it. The illness first struck the singer in 2014, when Bowie walked into the recording studio for his latest album without his hair or eyebrows after undergoing chemotherapy, swearing to secrecy by everyone he worked with.
Things started to look better for the star while he was in remission in mid-2015 – but sadly, in November of that year, the cancer returned and this time, having spread throughout his body, it was incurable.
Before his death, Bowie had been working with director Ivo Van Hove on a new stage show entitled “Lazarus,” which Bowie soon realized would not debut the show in New York in 2015.
Of Bowie’s “courageous” battle with cancer shortly after his death, Hove said: “We started working together on our show Lazarus and at one point he took me aside to say he wouldn’t always be able to put on there be because his illness. He told me he had cancer, liver cancer.
“The cast didn’t know it all along, and I suspect the musicians he recorded ‘Blackstar’ with didn’t know either.

“He made every effort to complete both of these projects on time so as not to let his illness win.
“Bowie was still writing on his deathbed, you might say. He fought like a lion and worked like a lion through it all. I had incredible respect for that.”
Bowie’s close friends, including actor Gary Oldman, also commented on the star’s remarkable take on battling the disease. Revealing that Bowie used to joke about his looks as his illness and grueling treatment caused him to lose a lot of weight.
Oldman shared, “He faced his illness with tremendous courage, dignity, grace and customary humor — even under dire circumstances,” Gary said.

Bowie remained optimistic throughout his treatment, but even before he battled cancer, it was reported in previous years that he had suffered a whopping six heart attacks, some of which occurred while the star was on tour.
The 2018 documentary David Bowie: The Last Five Years featured Bowie’s bandmates recalling how the star developed symptoms and began “writhing” backstage.
“We finished the show and then it seemed like David was in a lot of pain and obviously something wasn’t right,” recalled guitarist Gerry Leonard.

The liver is the second largest organ in the body after your skin. It is located below the right lung and is protected by the lower ribs on the right side of your body. Liver cancer develops when cells within the area start dividing and growing out of control.
With around 6,200 people a year (17 new cases every day) liver cancer is one of the most common in the UK. What makes it even more concerning is the fact that many individuals have no signs or symptoms in the early stages.
The NHS explains that liver cancer symptoms can include:
- Your skin or the whites of your eyes turn yellow (jaundice), you may also have itchy skin, darker urine and paler stools than usual
- Loss of appetite or weight loss without trying
- Feeling tired or lacking energy
- General malaise or flu-like symptoms
- A lump in the right side of your abdomen.
Others will find that they feel sick, have pain in the upper right side of their abdomen, or have indigestion that develops shortly after eating.
Symptoms are similar in several different forms of liver cancer, the most common of which is known as secondary liver cancer, which tends to spread to areas in the body other than the lungs. Primary liver cancer is less common.
Liver cancer is often treatable, but it usually depends on several factors, such as the type of cancer, how big it is, whether it has spread, and where it is located. If liver cancer is caught early, is small, and hasn’t spread, it may be surgically removed.
Other forms of treatment include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and the use of targeted drugs aimed at stopping the cancer from growing and killing cancer cells.
When a person has advanced liver cancer, it can be very difficult to treat. Cancer cannot be cured. If this is the case, the goal of treatment is to control the cancer and its symptoms and help you live longer.
