David James explains why Kieran Trippier could tempt other England players to join Newcastle in January

David James told Sky Sports News (Thursday, 10:45), Newcastle’s signing of Kieran Trippier could help them bring in other English players. The retired goalkeeper recalls an anecdote, regarding Sol Campbell.

Trippier, 31, is expected to be announced as the first to sign the club’s new ownership. The Times says he will be handed a £100,000-a-week deal – and he will sign it until 2024.

Newcastle are expected to bring in more players this month, along with Trippier. Eddie Howe needs more quality in the backline. That, as well as covering for the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson.

Former England goalkeeper James believes Trippier can help them bring in players. He recalls phoning Campbell, who had just joined Portsmouth in the relegation, to decide if he himself would join the club.

“When Sol Campbell signed for Portsmouth, I called him and asked if we were doing the right thing. He said we had, so I signed,” James said, when asked about the Trippier signing and other additions on Tyneside.

“If Kieran Trippier signs for Newcastle, other players, especially other English players, will be able to contact him. He can lure them into battle. It’s an important signing, and a signal of intent. “

James on Trippier: Newcastle could open flood gates this month

Bringing in Trippier is a huge deal. His leadership, his versatility, his sharp defense under Diego Simeone, his coordination, make him a vital addition – but great for Newcastle.

Even without James’ hint, players could call Trippier about a move to Newcastle – a real signing of him would likely tempt the players. Newcastle also has the financial potential to bring in quite a few people.

James is right, Trippier could indeed help Newcastle pursue a January signing. But his presence will definitely let players know that the new owners are serious and will do everything to avoid relegation.
