Dean Saunders impressed by latest Tottenham transfer rumour

Dean Saunders has claimed that ‘Antonio Conte is on a mission’ while Tottenham get closer to signing Richarlison from Everton. as he told talkSPORT on Thursday.

The former striker added that if Spurs can add a “world-class centre-back” and another right-back alongside Richarlison, they can see them closing the gap on Liverpool and Manchester City next season.

Over the last five years, Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola have watched their two teams reign supreme in England’s top flight.

The Reds added a Premier League title to their cabinet, as well as a European Cup and two domestic trophies last season, while Etihad’s have clearly dominated, having won four of their last five titles.

However, when Saunders was asked to share his thoughts on Richarlison’s upcoming move to Tottenham from Everton, he had this to say.

“His strengths are that he crosses crosses,” Saunders said. “If he plays in the middle, with his back to goal, he’s not the best. That’s his weakness.

“But when he comes from the flanks and comes from the opposite side at the end of flanks, I think he’s really good. And I like the way he plays. He’s got that fire in his stomach, so I think he’s a good signing for Spurs.

“I think Conte is on a mission. Spurs will do really well. I think a few more signings (on top of Richarlison) like a world-class centre-back and a right-back then I think they have a chance of knocking on Liverpool and Manchester City’s door. And win a trophy.”

In recent years, Daniel Levy has had his critics for how wrong things have gone for Spurs, particularly towards the end of Mauricio Pochettino’s reign and what happened after he left.

But with Conte now in the dugout, the Spurs chairman appears to be backing the Italian up the hill and back, evidenced by his putting £60m on the table for Richarlison.

As Neil Warnock pointed out, Levy isn’t the type to slip that kind of money to a player who won’t be first choice, so he really needs to believe what Conte brings to the table.

Now it’s up to Conte and the players to deliver the goods next season as many people will support them to go beyond fourth place.

But can they get to the next level? Spurs have been craving this all-important trophy and this is the best chance they’ll have in a long time.
