Jermain Defoe has praised Antonio Conte and expressed shock at how quickly the Italian has sparked seismic improvements in the Tottenham squad, while saying the above talkSPORT.

Spurs quickly appointed Conte in November within a day of sacking Nuno Espirito Santo. The Portuguese player lasted only four months as Jose Mourinho’s successor.

Most results and performances remain a mixed bag under Conte. So far, the Spurs have racked up eight wins to three draws and three losses in all competitions. Two of those defeats were comfortable wins for Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

The North Londoners have never really threatened their opponents either way in the past week. Even if they did, however, Spurs were second to Thomas Tuchel’s The Blues.

Tottenham also overcame League One Morecambe at home in the FA Cup before the return leg lasted 15 minutes. Conte needed two goals from Harry Kane to reach the fourth round.

But Conte has stunned former Tottenham striker Defoe with what the Italian has achieved since replacing Nuno at the helm. The former England international praised the 52-year-old after helping Spurs transition into the period they had under Nuno.

Defoe points out that Tottenham have more ground in Conte’s system than they had at the start of the season. Time note Spurs overcame 100.2 km a game under Nuno and 107.5 km in the previous period. After Conte’s first 7 games, their average distance is 115.3km.

“Everybody knows how much I love the football club and when Antonio Conte got the job I was delighted,” said Defoe speak. “He is an unbelievable manager with his experience.

“You have to look at the stats. I’ve looked at the stats running and in such a short amount of time I can’t believe the improvement. What did he do in training?

“I texted [Romelu] Lukaku and the likes of Ashley Young and Victor Moses who have played under Conte and they say the players have never trained so hard. But at the same time it’s interesting, and that’s why the players get those numbers. ”

Defoe will no doubt be hoping Conte’s actions at Hotspur Way now will be in response to Chelsea’s loss to Arsenal. Tottenham host their north London rivals in the Premier League on Sunday looking to avenge a 1-3 defeat under Nuno.

The Gunners dominated the first half at Emirates Stadium in the clash in September. Mikel Arteta’s side tore through Spurs’ defence, and made it past most of the late counter-attacks.
