Derek Hough was a judge onDancing with the stars‘ for two seasons and has won the Mirrorball Trophy six times. He knows a thing or two about which candidates might end up coming out on top.

As part of a partnership with Southwest Rapid Rewards credit cards from Chase and their new Teach the love programthe professional dancer sat down with Heavy to talk about the program and “Dancing With the Stars.”

Hough thinks many contestants might surprise viewers

While there are certainly frontrunners in the competition when it comes to dance experience and scores, Hough shared that he believes many contestants who aren’t necessarily at the top of the leaderboard will surprise fans.

“I think Jordin Sparks is magnetic, I think she just has this amazing charisma and she shines when she dances,” he said. “I think Daniel [Durant] is extraordinary, I’m just impressed. Last week his musicianship was amazing and he’s deaf and it’s overwhelming.”

He added: “Selma Blair does mind-blowing things that defy all odds, but Gabby does [Windey] is fantastic. She’s a really strong dancer.”

Hough believes many different candidates could emerge and come out on top later in the competition.

“Trevor Donovan, he really surprised me,” he said. “Because, especially in that first package the first week, he said I have a dance phobia, and I said, ‘Okay, you can put that to bed, bro. you love dancing You went from one extreme to the other. Now you will be obsessed with dance.”

He added: “Even Vinny [Guadagnino], it’s so much fun to watch. The first week he was like that, eh, but the next week he came back and was fantastic. He just gives it his all and it’s fun to watch, so we’ll see what happens.”

Hough helps send teachers on vacation

Hough has partnered with Chase’s Southwest Rapid Rewards Credit Cards to provide the Teach the love program.

I love educators, I love teachers,” Hough said. “Because to me I am an eternal student and I am grateful for all the teachers who have influenced my life. And I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for all the teachers in my life, but I also love to travel. i love adventure But for me that’s also where I get inspiration from, you know? That’s where I get inspiration for creative ideas.”

He added: “So, especially in this time where teachers have been the absolute superheroes, especially in the last few years. This is a good opportunity to give back to them, to see and appreciate them. It’s kind of cool, we call it educational leave.”

Nominations will be accepted from October 5, World Teachers’ Day, to November 9 at the website here. Students can nominate their favorite teacher, Hough said, adding that if they’re under 18, parents can nominate their children’s teachers.
