Police are looking for a man for questioning after missing Georgia man Nathan Millard, 42, was found dead and curled up in a rug in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Officials did not say if they believe Derrick Perkins, 45, played any role in the disappearance and death. Officials previously said someone put Millard in that rug and left him there.
“Perkins was last seen in the South Baton Rouge area driving a 2003 Toyota Camry,” they wrote Friday.
Police say Perkins also faces one probation violation, as well as criminal damage to property, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and three counts of access device fraud.
Officials are asking that anyone with information on Perkins’ whereabouts call the Baton Rouge Police Department at 225-389-2000 or Crime Stoppers at 225-344-7867.
As previously reported, Millard, a resident of Covington, Georgia, was in Baton Rouge on a brief business trip. Authorities initially said he was last seen on the night of February 22.
“Nathan was last seen on video walking around the Courtyard Marriott at 3rd Street and Florida Ave. wearing a black Carhartt shirt, jeans, brown boots and a black Columbia baseball cap,” search and recovery organization Texas EquuSearch wrote on March 1. “Nathan is known to have visited Happy’s Irish Pub on 3rd Street and Convention St. and is believed to have left the pub on foot at around 11:30pm to return to the hotel. His phone and wallet were found discarded a few blocks away, but Nathan was not sighted.”
Baton Rouge Police Commissioner Captain Kevin Heinz said in a Tuesday news conference that they used surveillance cameras from local businesses to track Millard’s whereabouts from the night of February 22 through the early morning of February 23. Eventually, the man ended up at a bus station, the captain said. A security guard offered to help him because she felt he was out of place, even though he didn’t appear to be in need. She offered to take him away or call the police for him. Millard declined and left of his own volition, Heinz said.
According to the captain, the man was observed over the next few hours and followed to several local businesses. He was followed until about 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Heinz said.
The captain described all of this video evidence and said Millard appears to be in these locations under his own power and he does not appear to be in distress. Heinz said nothing of a criminal nature appeared to be happening.
And yet Millard somehow died, ending up in a rug on a vacant lot in Block 2900 of the Scenic Highway, where he was found at 3:34 a.m. on March 6.
“It appears he was left there,” Heinz said Tuesday. “He most likely did not die there.”

At the moment, however, police said they found no sign of third-party negligence. Specifically, Heinz called the lack of details such as gunshot wounds or blunt force trauma. He didn’t want to answer a question about whether drugs were involved.
“No evidence of internal or external trauma was found,” the East Baton Rouge Community Coroner’s Office said in a statement obtained by Law&Crime. “The final results of the autopsy are pending when further studies are conducted, including toxicological tests. Cause and manner of death pending final autopsy report.”
For now, Millard’s death remains a mystery.
“And look, we’re going to ask whoever put him there, if something happened and there was a moment of panic, come forward,” Heinz said. “We just want to know what happened to him.”
