The Detroit Lions made what many consider a surprise addition on Wednesday, April 13, signing DeShon Elliott safe with a year.
Elliott visited Detroit earlier in the day and decided to sign the team by sundown. That deal was quickly confirmed by the Lions the next morning. With this move, Detroit has officially added a player with some big hits to their second spot.

After the news was revealed and made official, Elliott jumped on Twitter and made the news official with a rather motivating tweet. As he said, it was
“7era!! Be the great lion!!!!,” Elliott tweeted.
The reference in the tweet for number seven refers to the jersey that Elliott will be wearing with the team. Previously, Elliott wore the number 32 shirt in Baltimore, but he clearly thinks it’s time for a change as he transitions into his career for the Lions.
In terms of messaging, however, Elliott is in the lead. It’s time for the Lions to be great, and it’s great to see a player like Elliott take that momentum into his next chapter right away.
Elliott . Career Highlights & Statistics
In terms of his play, Elliott is a solid youngster and when he’s healthy, he’s slamming a big punch on the field for Baltimore. After being Raven’s sixth-round pick in 2017, Elliott made 109 tackles, 3.5 tackles and 1 interception. He also made seven saves and two fouls while playing for Baltimore, sometimes starting from 2020 to 2021.
Here are some of Elliott’s best works on the field:
Nicknamed “The Joker,” Elliott has become a fixture in the Ravens’ sideline as he’s played and a solid player with youth at his side. If he can figure out the injury situation and prove that he is healthy, he could become a potential free agent stealing in this free agent class.
Why is Elliott presenting a major upgrade for Lions
This season, the Lions entered the company freely with much fanfare. Many assume the team will choose to go after a bigger name such as Marcus Williams of the New Orleans Saints. Recently, the team has been mentioned as having odds of signing Tyrann Mathieu. The Lions have a smaller position, though, choosing only to bring in incumbent free agent Tracy Walker. It’s a solid move, but Walker could use some of the depth around him in position as well as a potential companion for 2022. Detroit’s Monday has some young pieces and one Players like Elliott give them another fascinating piece to build around for the future.
Getting Elliott into the mix is an interesting one as he is a solid player with some solid tangible and intangible conditions as a player. He’s been making his debut this season in Baltimore, and Raven doesn’t usually give up young, talented players. Elliott has picked up injuries in three of his first four seasons in the league, which could cause Baltimore to lose patience with him as a player. In 2018, he broke his forearm. In 2019, a knee injury kept him on the bench due to injury. Late November 2021, a biceps and chest injury ended his season.
Even so, provided that everything has been carefully checked in terms of health, the Lions can get an attractive player, have a lot of good football ahead of them and be very young. Elliott has been anointed for Raven’s safety starting in 2020 and plays there through 2021. To that end, he could have the experience the Lions crave in the position.
Looks like he’s also motivated to keep going and be great in Detroit, which is great news for the team.
