A “cold-blooded” Colorado woman on trial for assaulting and killing her ex-boyfriend, a USPS employee, when the victim was delivering mail in 2021 was convicted of murder in Boulder County on Tuesday.
The jury found that Devan Schreiner, now 27, shot and killed Jason Schaefer, 33, multiple times and committed first-degree murder.
Boulder County Jail records verified by Law&Crime show that Schreiner was initially booked at the facility at 4 a.m. on October 14, 2021, several hours after the shooting the previous afternoon. Although no verdict information is available in the prison system yet, records show that Schreiner’s first-degree murder case is in the post-jury deliberation stage.
Judge Patrick Butler on Tuesday immediately sentenced the defendant to life in prison without parole, the punishment that Colorado statutes provide without the death penalty.
As previously reported by Law&Crime, citing the warrant in Schreiner’s case, the shooting was investigated by the Longmont Police Department after Schaefer was shot in front of neighborhood mailboxes. He died at the scene.
When the postmaster arrived at the scene of the USPS worker’s death, he remarked, “Did baby mama do it?”
Prosecutors said the murder took place while the former couple was embroiled in a custody battle over their young child.

Shocked Longmont locals told investigators they heard four gunshots and saw a suspect in a hoodie fleeing the scene. It wasn’t long before surveillance video showed the defendant’s vehicle was near the scene of the crime, court documents said.
In an apparently failed attempt to create an alibi, Schreiner told investigators that before the shooting, she ate pizza rolls and returned to work.
Boulder District Attorney Michael Dougherty reportedly told CBS Colorado after the jury’s verdict and the suspect’s conviction that Devan Schreiner was “a cold-blooded killer.”
“She took steps to get away with this brutal murder, but she underestimated two things. First, the victim was deeply loved by his family and associates; The information and the support they provided was vital,” the prosecutor said. “In addition, the US Postal Inspectors and Longmont detectives did their best and worked with our prosecution team to ensure justice was done. As always, we appreciate the judges’ time and service.”
9News reported that prosecutors read a victim statement from Schaefer’s mother in court. The grieving mother reportedly said she had “not slept” since her son was murdered and that her family’s life was “ruined forever”. Schaefer’s mother also said her 7-year-old grandson, the child who was at the center of the custody battle that preceded the murder, has now lost both parents.
The boy is reportedly living with relatives in Connecticut.
Without a successful appeal or an act of clemency, Schreiner will never see the outside of the prison walls again. She will be 28 years old on August 14th.
