For D’Amelio, A letter to me best encompasses the variety of musical genres she incorporated into her debut album, from the pop-funk song “Not Enough” to the ’80s-inspired title track “A Letter to Me.” “I was in the studio trying to make as many songs as possible and see how many different styles I could do and what my voice could do. I ended up liking all the different types of songs and I put them all on one album,” she says. “We went with the title A letter to me because I just felt like that was the most representative of the album and that was the strongest song.”

The final song on the album is “Be Happy”, D’Amelio’s debut single from 2020 about her experiences with mental illness and depression. “Be Happy” is the only single from D’Amelio’s early days in music that she recorded A letter to me. “I just wanted to show my development on the album. I have all the new songs, and then to end with “Be Happy,” it was to take a step back and say, “This is where I started.” You can listen to it again, and here I am,” says you. “Even though ‘Be Happy’ is my first song and I can definitely hear the vocal struggles on this song because I’ve grown a lot, I felt it was important to have it on the album.”

With more than 34 million followers (and counting) on ​​TikTok, D’Amelio knows that most of her fans come from social media. But when it comes to promoting her own music on TikTok, D’Amelio isn’t sure if becoming a social media trend is the direction she wants to go. “I definitely know I have to do it, but at the same time I get a little nervous about posting on TikTok. Not for any reason other than getting in my own way,” she says. “I’m just like, ‘Oh my god. That’s so strange. People make videos of the songs I make.” When someone hears a song, you don’t see them hear it. But if someone makes a video about it, you can see their whole reaction and what they’re doing with it.”

Music was a learning curve for D’Amelio, which is why she doesn’t look back with regret on the mistakes she made in the industry. “I try not to think about the bad times. It was all a learning process,” she says. “Anything negative that could have happened has turned into something positive now that the album is out.”

As for her dream collaboration, D’Amelio has just one name, another former social media star turned multi-platinum artist. “I always say the same person. Shawn Mendes,” she says. “I think it’s great that he also started on social media and is where he is today. I’m a big fan of his.”
